I think we should pre-peel bananas, oranges etc and put those it nice vacuum sealed bags as well. Wouldn't want to strain someones fingers.

Ok so i'll back up from my previous post a little. So in the interests of not being a prick, I get that some people might require help in this area, should this be something that supermarkets (stores) do for people....like the deli counter. Its like the straws ban. Some people need straws, so they should be able to get them without prejudice. But the majority of people which there is no "need" the default should be the one with the least environmental impact.

I think doing this for vegetables and other vacuum sealed items would also work. Have some peeled for those that wish/require it, but hold them fresh int he deli counter. Rather than prepackage them.

I hope I've somewhat extricated myself from that hole I dug.

Onions should always be loose and no packaging, as they have their own packaging. Same applies to any similar vege/fruit. 100% saving on plastic right there.

No holes dug at all its very undertsandable, the trials and tribulations of a disabled person are not always obvious and I would have thought the same as you before I became disabled.

Fair point above re the pre-grated cheese, this is not something I have previously considered (but should have done!).

Ah yep, good point, I think that was mentioned here or by one of the supermarkets. Its like your grated cheese, sometimes there are exceptions, and if there are, then the plastic is no issue, its about common sense and education

I've not seen cucumbers wrapped in "old" moisture, doesn't seem that safe to me :-) Spellcheck/typos are a pain but can be funny too!

Except for some bizarre reason, the NZ public has been conditioned to buy pre-peeled red onions. I guess that's because they look "more appealing" - but it's a stupid waste IMO, I always remove the top layer and discard it if it's going raw in a salad anyway, as it's probably been fingered by nose picking / #$se scratching shoppers or otherwise damaged.

I reckon the whole thing is waste of time, and they are focusing in the wrong area.

'Single Use' plastic bags are not just single use. They have tons of uses, rubbish bags being one of them. Now instead of re-using supermarket bags, we have to buy more rubbish bags. Who is that helping? Definitely not the environment, and not our pockets either.

The focus ought to be on less ridiculous packaging, how stupid is it filling your 'environmentally friendly' paper or cloth supermarket bag with a bunch of products covered in shrink wrap and non-recyclable plastics.

So heres an odd one..

The local Pak N Save now has a sign out where the soft plastics collection bin was. Stating due to popularity and excessive resources demand/stockpiling issues it can no longer collect soft plastics and they need to go out with household rubbish

Get everyone to recycle and ditch the bags, then take away the ability to actually recycle them..

The popular soft plastics recycling at supermarkets is being suspended until next April because there's nowhere for it to go.

This year plastic sitting in storage containers around the country grew to 400 tonnes after the Melbourne-based processor it was shipped to stopped accepting New Zealand's plastic.

Soft Plastics Recycling Scheme chairman Malcolm Everts said global recycling had changed significantly and overseas markets for plastic were "drying up".

The decision to suspend the scheme was "extremely difficult".

"If we keep collecting, we will build up stockpiles. As a country, we need to focus on local processing," Everts said.

The suspension would enable them to balance capacity and "reset the scheme".

"Due to cessation of off-shore processing, we are still collecting more than we can process in NZ."

Well heck

If there wasn't more reason for people to give up taking a damn at all. Adding all the ability and then taking it away after (Chch council 180, Now this scheme) is sure going to push peoples hand. Back to where we were 10 years ago before spending all the money on options.

Back to square 1 with more and more products being wrapped in it by the day. Next stop, inability to take recycling from the kerb unless self sorted due to the costs of sorting what everyone is accustomed to putting in, out?...
