Watched Suburbicon last night, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

It was directed by George Clooney and written by the Coen brothers and it stars Matt Damon and Julianne Moore.

Definitely a Coen brothers movie.

I went to 'Darkest Hour' last week & it was simply superb.    There are so many fine performances quite apart from Gary Oldman as Churchill.   Lily James as Elizabeth Layton - the latest in a long line of typists who was assigned to work for Churchill.    You got the impression that no typist had stayed working for Churchill for very long before Elizabeth arrived!     Stephen Dillane as Lord Halifax.  Ben Mendelsohn as King George V1.    The scene in the tube train has been rubbished by almost every reviewer.    Churchill gets on the tube train & in the short time it takes to get to Westminster gets the opinion & names of people, then goes to the House of Commons to deliver the speech & uses the names of people he met on the train.   However, apart from this very unlikely scene everything else is brilliant.

Cloverfield Paradox - This movie had nothing new to offer. Many other movies have covered the same topic but done it much better. Definitely not recommended 3/10

Black Panther - Great special effects. Normally that's all I need. :-)

The plot was fine. The acting was fine. As marvel movies go, it's one of the better ones, for sure. That said, not your usual movie in many ways.........

I'd recommend it......even if I am a "colonizer". ;-)

Black Panther - One of the better superhero movies in a while (IMHO). Good story and special effects but action sequences are not on par with some of the other movies we have seen recently. All the characters were well served, specifically the bad guy who had a good back story and motive. 8/10

Kingsman: The Golden Circle - 7.5/10

A pretty good film, retained a lot of what made the first film good, without seeming too repetitive or boring.

The Hitman's Bodyguard - 8.5/10

A good sign for me is if I find myself laughing out loud, at home, on my own.  Several times during the film I found myself doing this.  I really enjoyed it - it's not particularly subtle or nuanced, but for an action film it managed to make both Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L Jackson's characters sympathetic and deeper than just a lump of meat on the trigger end of a gun.  I won't hide that I like Ryan Reynolds films - I even enjoyed Blade Trinity! - and he manages to fold in the humour that shines so brightly in Deadpool into this film.  There are also some very neat scenes showing how the two male leads met their respective partners, melding background violence and an anachronistic soundtrack, which brought a smile to my face.  I'd be happy to watch this again.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi - 7/10

I enjoyed it, but there were parts where it felt a little hollow.  I spent a bit of time afterwards trying to work out why that was so, and can't really put my finger on it.  I wondered if I was one of those who were unable to look past the original trilogy, but I don't think that was it.  Possibly it's because it feels, at times, like it's just a placeholder, to get us to the next film.  But that doesn't account for everything.  I may need to watch it again, which I wouldn't mind.  Just a lingering disappointment that the film I was most looking forward to all 2017 didn't send me out of the theatre buzzing with excitement.

Logan Lucky - 8/10

This was a broken viewing for me, over a couple of days as time allowed, but despite that it was a pretty good film.  Very much in the style of the Ocean's 11+ films (by the same director), but with a West Virginia feel and setting.  The casting was excellent, with Channing Tatum and Adam Driver as the Logan brothers who set out to rob the Charlotte Motor Speedway, bringing in help from Joe Bang (Daniel Craig) and his brothers (Jack Quaid and Brian Gleeson).  It was particularly refreshing to see Daniel Craig play a non-Bond role, and his turn as the incarcerated explosives expert was a scene stealer for me.

Atomic Blonde - Charlize Theron as a spy in Berlin around the time of the wall coming down. Not bad, quite stylish, good atmosphere and a good performance from CT. 7/10

Baby Driver - Bank heist movie with Ansel Egort (who?), Kevin Spacey and Jamie Foxx. Pretty entertaining with some good car chase action 7.5/10

World War Z - Brad Pitt in a big budget zombie apocalypse movie. Harmless way to pass a couple of hours 6/10

Black Panther: Good, but not amazing...perhaps I expected way too much due to the international praise it is receiving.7/10

Baby Driver: Good car chase scenes, snappy soundtrack and unexpected moments made this a surprise hit for me. 8/10

Hitman's Bodyguard: I like both ethe lead actors so was expecting laughs, violence and foul language, interspersed with softer and lighter moments. I was not disappointed. 8/10

T2 Trainspotting. 8/10

Very acceptable sequel to the fantastic original and an equally depressing commentary on drug dominated lives in a run down part of Scotland.

‘Game Night’ - saw it yesterday and thought it was the funniest movie we have seen for a very long time. Very good.

True Grit - Coen Brothers take on the John Wayne classic starring Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon.

I've never seen a bad Coen Brothers movie and this is a worthy effort although Bridges mumbling is a bit excessive at times. 7.5/10

Black Panther - I can understand the praise and hype this movie is getting because of its (almost entirely) black cast for such a huge movie, and I certainly appreciate and applaud it on that level. However I feel like this might be blinding the critics to the fact that it is actually just a mediocre movie. All the actors were good, but were held back by a simplistic and uncompelling story with mostly one dimensional characters. Not a bad movie, but an entirely forgettable one. 5.5/10

So I assume you haven’t seen A Serious Man, then?!

I’m generally a huge fan of their movies, but I’d still say some are better (eg Big Lebowski) than others (eg Burn After Reading), while one - A Serious Man - I really disliked...
