freitasm:

"Pope Francis has taken the remarkable step of dissolving a Peruvian-based Catholic movement, the Sodalitium of Christian Life (SCV), after years of attempts at reform and a Vatican investigation."

Streisand effect is full display. I doubt even 100 Peruvians even knew this organization existed, until the Pope used a giant flashing red neon sign saying "look here"

Not sure you realise how bit Catholicism is in South America. The announcement came during an event in Brazil.

I know Central America and South America are very catholic.

I always found Santa Muerte fascinating

Santa Muerte, the Alluring and Controversial Folk Saint of Death

While the Virgin of Guadalupe is perhaps the most iconic and ubiquitous of Mexican Catholic imagery, Santa Muerte, or Saint Death, is quickly becoming a powerful cultural force herself. Though Santa Muerte is not an officially sanctioned saint, having been condemned by the Catholic Church, she has nevertheless become a popular folk saint in Mexico and parts of the United States. That is, her followers, their devotion, and their growing numbers have contributed to her rapidly increasing popularity and visibility within Mexican and Mexican-American cultures. As the personification of death itself (herself), Santa Muerte is a thin, skeletal figure, often depicted as a female Grim Reaper.
...

Santa Muerte: Saint of the Dispossessed, Enemy of Church and State

La Santa Muerte has crossed the US/Mexico Border for over a decade, accompanying her devotees on their arduous journeys north. Also known as La Flaquita (The Skinny One), La Niña Blanca (The White Girl), La Niña Negra (The Black Girl), Señora de las Sombras (Lady of the Shadows), La Huesuda (Bony Lady), La Niña Bonita (The Pretty Girl), La Madrina (The Godmother), and more reverently, La Santísima Muerte (The Most Holy Death), she is a beloved saint of dispossessed peoples.

I first met Santa Muerte in 2002 during fieldwork with undocumented migrant transgender sex workers from Guadalajara, Mexico, who lived in San Francisco. Santa Muerte featured prominently on home altars in their single-room occupancy hotel rooms. I had not encountered the saint before and was surprised by her obvious importance in their lives. Thus began over a decade of following Santa Muerte to Mexico, California, the US/Mexico Border, and even small towns in northern Wisconsin.

In the early years of my research, few people in Mexico would talk to me about her, and few in the US knew of her; she was either underground or unknown. Now, the Bony Lady is “out” and very visible. Since early 2000, worship has grown dramatically in Mexico and in the US, especially among migrants. I came to understand her popularity among migrants and LGBTQ communities in Mexico

Walking into the bathroom and hearing what sounded like a flock of banshees inside the room.  It was mosquitos brought out, presumably, by the slight moisture in lieu of rain we had recently.  I filled the air with flyspray and five minutes later the floor was covered in black specks.  Hopefully the mossie eater directly outside the window, which turns itself on when it gets dark, will take care of their friends.

Edited to add: Went in this morning and the floor was litted with dead mozzies.  They don't really show up in a photo but they were everywhere.

The fact that there are now apps to play Vatican Roulette on.  The least reliable contraception method there is turned into an app by someone who read about it on Wikipedia and thought "hey, I can code that in ten minutes!".

"Man arrested after disguising himself as rabbi to infiltrate Nashville Jewish community center"

And of course, the guy is part of a neo-Nazi group.

kingdragonfly: Cops hot on wheels of ride-on lawn mower thief: One News

Fun quiz idea: Florida or New Zealand?

"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

Which will be exactly 80 years old next Monday and is in danger of being forgotten and portrayed as a (‘fly shit’ in the history) lie by certain mindsets. Even Pokemons were hunted there (for a short time) without piety.
