Nety: skyhigh, there is around the same amount of information being sent be it 720p or 1080i.
720p is a lower resolution but the whole picture is updated every frame. 1080i is a higher resolution but only half the picture is updated every frame (every second line).
The end result is that they look much the same on the screen. I seem to remember that 1080i is better for fast moving stuff like sports.
