Back to square 1 with more and more products being wrapped in it by the day. Next stop, inability to take recycling from the kerb unless self sorted due to the costs of sorting what everyone is accustomed to putting in, out?...

It sounds like you are looking for a reason not to give a damn.

Surely issues with recycling is ever more reason to push for changes and reductions in the current packaging regime.

Could not agree more - it's easier and more effective to treat the initial cause rather then chasing the mess that it creates. So I agree; ban single-use plastic bags and drink bottles. They are both a curse.

You got me well wrong in that case. But thanks for the individual targeting despite me referencing 'everyone' and 'people' not 'I'

I don't walk out of the supermarket with plastic bags other than packaging forced upon. Have not for ages. And make regular drops to said supermarkets with all the soft plastics possible. More than most realise is possible (potato chip packets, treat wrappers, frozen goods bags)

And even take the abundance of commercial made un-nessary waste from unpacking IT gear (thanks dell and HP) from work with me as I hate seeing it in general skips.

Now, all of a sudden that entire return/keep from waste options that money was spent on advertising and making a clean attempt look for are non existing in Canterbury.

As someone who actively works to remove it from the system now has no option. Expand your consideration like I did in my post further than own beliefs to those who only did so occasionally, even if it stemmed from family peer pressures and question where their motivation to at the least separate it from rubbish, let alone to think further up the chain for cause over effect like some here do, just went.

If you or I were one of the occasional 'thats right we can redirect this from landfill' thinkers would you bother keeping looking for the 'we're taking plastics again' sign in 4 months or simply slip into a trash, trash, trash reigeme. Fairly sure for most the population it would be the latter.

Is it more of a reason to want to change? It sure is.
But It's not like we see advertising targeting the source and how to make a change on tv and the media, it's on the last mile attempts to fix that everyone else tries to feel good about compliance with.

Yep, biodegradable in there too. was another reason CHC council stopped softs in recycling - due to cross contamination.

The 15c ones will also be on hitlist I'd say. Being pushed hard and paper becoming an option at some stores.

I can't find my pic but I sat out the countdown at CHC airport watching all the 15c purchased bags heading off to fresh rental vans, predicting less reuse than locals and more impact. Sure enough within a week there was 2 in the nearest rubbish bin to the entrance.

Yep, the Govt advised it was multi stage, and targeting a large range of packaging plastic, and they have a number of large companies working with them

My guess is there will not be any significant change now..........supermarkets wont support anything that hurts their profit line.

Your last statement couldn't ring more true in this. Supermarkets run on fear. If they differ from a competitor, they may lose profit. So conform.

Even down to the size and shape of fruit and veg. Rest.. bin.

It has a soft plastics firm, possibly even the one we use to export to that just closed Its doors too.

So what if there was no intention that the carry bags were re-used. They reality is they were re-sued for loads of things not just rubbish.

No one knows what stage 2 or 3 is because there is no such thing.

Correct, and its consumers who have to signal the shift and stop buying 'food in a packet', and that will be the real test for all the supporters of the plastic bag ban. Its too easy to target hardware/non perishable goods.

Well, that's one way of doing it, regulation is another.

Personally I want to see a system where every company that makes or imports plastic and other packaging has to take the product and packaging back and deal with it after the consumer is finished with it.

Many retailers have signed an agreement to ensure other plastics such as food wrappings are recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.

What about other plastics?

Both the main supermarket chains are working to find alternatives. Foodstuffs introduced a recyclable meat tray, and Countdown has removed 70 tonnes of unnecessary packaging from its produce section, including plastic packaging from bananas.

"This alone removed 15.8 tonnes of plastic. We also no longer sell packs of single-use plastic straws," a spokeswoman said.

Foodstuffs is also a signatory to the Plastics Packaging Declaration, which promises to make all its packaging being reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025.
