The Predator, 5/10

Somewhere in there was a really good film; there are occasional glimpses of what it could have been that shine through.

Overall, however, it was an incoherent rambling mess that just highlighted (yet again) just how badly heavy-handed "studio interference" can ruin what may have started off as quite a good film.

Pity.

5th Wave. 6/10

Had potential to be a good movie, but fell short on the story line, no real fight back by the earthlings.

Summary.

Aliens come to earth and start picking humanity off in waves like natural disasters and plagues leading up to the 5th wave.

The Men Who Stare At Goats 7/10

Slightly odd ball comedy with George Clooney and Ewan McGregor about a US Army unit tasked with gaining psycho kinetic powers. Some funny moments but doesn't always work.

The Unforgiven 9/10

Superb western directed by and starring Clint Eastwood alongside Morgan Freeman and Gene Hackman.

Retired assassins decide to do one more job.

Pans Labyrinth 7/10

Part drama part fantasy directed by Guillermo Del Toro set in Spain just after the civil war. Starts slowly but grew on me.

Skyscraper 6/10

Pretty thin on plot, and doesn't break any new ground, but a solid "put your brain in neutral" action movie.

Absolutely agree. Up there with the greats of movies and especially westerns. It joins The Good, the Bad & the Ugly [1966], along with The Magnificent Seven [1960]

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I have to be picky and point out the "The Unforgiven" is a 1960 western starring Burt Lancaster and Audrey Hepburn.

The Clint Eastwood film is simply "Unforgiven", and it is very good.

Nitpick over.

Hereditary. Meh... Not bad, but not particularly good. It was all style over substance. 5/10

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom: Wow, just wow. Really, really bad. The fact that they had the most "exciting" set-piece near the beginning of the movie left it nowhere to go - and that was only one of it's many problems. 2.5/10

Solo: A Star Wars Story: Lazy and thoroughly unnecessary. 4/10

I felt it was 2/3 of a good movie. As soon as the final act kicked in it lost me. I much preferred the family dynamic aspects of the film than where it ended up.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Netflix) - 6/10

I realise I may be about to express an unpopular opinion, and spark howls of outrage from dedicated fans, but I found Close Encounters to be a little on the dull side, and fell short of the "classic" I was expecting.

I'm aware that there are a number of classic films which I've never seen, and I've been slowly making inroads over the past few years. A little while ago I watched Jaws on Netflix, and found that was a really good film that lived up to its reputation, and I gave it a deserved 9/10. As a sci-fi fan, born the year this film came out, I really thought I would like Close Encounters, but it just seemed quite plodding to me. The characters felt a little flat, and the story disjointed (though - disclosure - I watched it over several nights so I accept it could be partly my fault).

Oh well, now at least I can cross it off my list...

To be fair, I wonder how much of that would be because it may not have 'aged well' and also that your expectations were unrealistically high too, given the hype.

Yeah, I imagine if you watched in 15 years ago or so...

I watched Smokey and the Bandit 2 nights ago, had it's moments, mostly nostalgic, but as a movie, it wasn't great.

I watched Close Encounters when it came out in 1977. It was amazing -the effects, the story, the conspiracy to hide something in plain sight.

A lot of that still lives today in the back of some people's minds but for an almost teenager that looked incredible. I bought the DVD back in the late 90s and watched it recently on Amazon again. Of course is a lot different from our world now but the basics is still there - it is a good story.
