Here we go with the "Disaster porn"  headlines
"Dubai floods: Kiwi family swim to safety as roads turn to rivers"

Later in the story, the swim becomes "swim"
...water levels rose suddenly, forcing them to “swim” to safety.

and even later in the story we actually find out that "swim" becomes something else,
,,forcing them to wade to safety as water levels continued to rise.

and when we actually get the picture showing it was actually thigh deep..

I guess "Kiwi family wade to safety" just wasn't click baity enough :)

It's this sort of hard hitting investigative journalism that really makes me value my subscription to Stuff.

Oh, I misread the headline, I thought it said "how you can tell if someone is lying to a survey company"

I don't usually spend time on Stuff but I have seen the occasional article there that seemed like serious journalism. Didn't Stuff also emerge from the Dominion Post? That isn't what I would term a tabloid publication, at least not when it still was the Dominion Post. Dumping on Stuff seems to have become a kind of knee-jerk reflex amongst some here. Maybe that is justified. Maybe it isn't. I have no desire to defend trash journalism. I just wonder if Stuff is really as bad as people suggest. Maybe it is. I don't know.

The  websites of the masthead Newspapers continue as
https://www.thepost.co.nz and https://www.thepress.co.nz/ etc , and actually appear to carry what mostly passes as "news"

Without this content Stuff.co.nz has become a cross between The Spinoff and news.com.au...

For anyone who doesn't know, 'tabloid' is a piece of print jargon which refers to the format. It's somewhat smaller than a broadsheet which makes it easier to read on a train but less useful to put down on the floor when painting. The word is often used pejoratively but of course the contents are not necessarily reflective of the format.

Now that DomPost has lost all its stories and advertising and has a fraction of the content, it is published in a tabloid format so yes, the DomPost is literally a tabloid publication now.

Personally, I've notice an improvement in Stuff stories since the new owners took over. I appreciated the series about the conspiracy theorist nuts who were trying to inveigle their way into positions on councils and boards, as one example.

When it comes to royal stories, the correct way to eat a chocolate biscuit and so on, well, they've got bills to pay. People click on the links and get entertained and Stuff get some ad revenue so everyone's happy.

I'm well aware of what the term means but as someone who has lived in Britain, I also know it has another very specific usage there, often referred to as the 'tabloid press'.

Got that. Brits now also use the term 'red top' to refer to the tabloids that publish bingo and t*ts but exclude other tabloid format papers such as the independent.
