SmallFoot. Took my 6 and 9 year olds. Quite a number of laugh out loud moments in it. Not a bad movie, 7/10

Kids both LOVED it.

My kids have been spoilt these holidays, as there mum took them to that, then we all went and saw Teen Titans the next week.

Man From Earth - very much an "intellectual" movie, not action etc but gets you thinking.  8/10

I would advise against watching the sequel.

Matrix - First of the trilogy in 4K HDR with Atmos sound on my new Projector.

Held up pretty well. I was surprised how much of it I couldn't recall which made it nearly like watching the first time. The 4K version probably doesn't have as much as a difference to the Blu-Ray, but it was still excellent. The sound was fantastic, though the sound effects vs voice were a little disproportionate.

8/10

I remember when I bought The Matrix DVD when it first came out. It was THE sound test reference for any good 5.1 setup.

Tag and Ocean's 8 on iTunes.
Viewed both not expecting too much and was pleasantly surprised. Both were entertaining, if not particularly cerebral.
7/10 for both.

Ocean's 8 - Blueray - 6/8 - enjoyable enough after a few wines. But the plot was like Swiss cheese all I needed was the crackers, oh wait there was a few all ready provided.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Jack Reacher 2 Netflix 1/10

It was so bad I don't even remember what the whole of the title was. After about 30 minutes I did a crossword while it was on.

Why is it that an actor like Tom Cruise who, whatever you may think of the guy knows his trade, makes turkey's as well as some excellent movies (American Made for example) while actors like Daniel Day Lewis or even Di Caprio turns out a quality product  time after time.

I didn't give it zero in case something even worse comes along in the future.

A Star is Born 2018

Story well re-told with a mostly great original soundtrack. Lady Gaga proved herself an engaging and talented actress and Bradley Cooper nailed it as actor and director, if a little self indulgent at times. Together they had great chemistry in the lead roles. It wouldn’t surprise me if this got a couple of Emmy nominations. 8/10.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

Dingbatt: First Man.
Centred mainly on Neil Armstrong's family life, relatively slow paced, could have told the story just as effectively in less than 2 hours 20 minutes. The film makes very little effort to introduce people and to get the most out of the film you need to have a reasonable grasp of the American space program.
It was well acted and audio was good but don't expect a movie along the lines of The Right Stuff or Apollo 11.
6.5/10
Viewing was spoiled a little by the theatre we watched in. Westgate (Auckland) cinema 3 has a large blemish about a third of the way up the screen, right in the centre. Once it's seen, it's really hard to un-see. Compounding that there was so much ambient light from the exit signs, etc in the theatre that the black expanse of Space was a washed out dark grey. I'd like to know what resolution the movie was shot in and what it was projected at in this instance. I want to watch this movie again at some stage, but it will be on my OLED and hopefully in Dolby Vision.

Edit: 6.5 is probably a bit harsh and coloured by the theatre experience. Perhaps more 7.5.

I'm pretty sure the final sequence was shot in IMAX but have no idea about the rest of the film.

Jack Reacher - Never Go Back.

The clue about whether to watch is in the title. The book Never Go back by Lee Child was a good read. The storyline in the movie barely resembles the book, other than the names of some of the characters, and they successfully turned a good story into nothing. Very disappointing to watch.

gehenna: [snip]

I've seen this kind of thread on other forums I use, but they're now getting unmanageable with over 1000 replies,

had to laugh at the first post in the thread @gehenna - ten years later, look at the monster you created!

My partners pick so not my kind of movie but still enjoyed it. Enjoyed Lady Gaga in AHS and also in this, Bradley Cooper played his part really well. He plays a good drunk!

Halloween 7/10
The added gore was well received and done really well, although the story so easily guessable and no surprises there.

Of all the 10 year old monsters I could have created, I'm happy this was the one!
