Valerian and the City of a 1000 Planets 7.5/10

Visual sci-fi feast from Luc Besson that lacks that x-factor that Bruce Willis and the rest of the cast brought to The Fifth Element

Could have been an OK film if it weren't for the two leads who were dull as doorstops.  And for some reason Dane DeHaan was emulating 90's Keanu which was odd.

Totally agree. I thought Dane DeHaan was good in A Cure For Wellness where the part fitted him but he's just not a bad guy fighting super cop in the mould of Reeves or Willis.

As for Cara Devigne - don't give up your day job (modelling).

Yesterday I watched 'Searching'.

The film had an unusual approach, have not seen anything like that. I would recommend it to everybody who wants a new experience from the film industry. I like the fact that it was probably really cheap to make, but came out as a good movie.

The Meg

As you’d expect, which is not much.
In a world where decompression sickness is non existent and full of irrational decisions and plot holes you get some good action here and there.

5/10

Halloween - The new direct sequel to the first Halloween and retcons everything that's happened since then.  It was great, old school slasher great.  They did both characters huge justice after the dismal sequels over the years.

Venom - Hmmm, this is a bad movie, no doubt, but it's kind of fun watching Tom Hardy do his thing.  If it were anyone else it would be trash, but it's worth a watch given his performance!

Had a bad movie night last night.

First we tried watching "The Happytime Murders" with Melissa McCarthy and The Muppets in adult entertainment mode. Ugh. Not funny. Not even  a little. It was $7.99 on Lightbox to rent.

It's awful. We stopped after 10 minutes. Horrible. Can't get a refund. Then checked Rotten Tomatoes and it was 23% rated and in the running for ten worst movies if the decade. I'd vote for that.

Then we tried "Oceans 8". It was my second time. First was with my daughter. It was dreadfully boring. But my wife was interested, so I lied and said I hadn't seen it. After about half an hour she declared it too boring to carry on with....and we stopped. So it's not just me. All 3 of us found it tedious. The cast is great - but the story just didn't grab any of us....and the music was terrible. I kept wondering why they were using the worst elevator music ever recorded......

So that was a waste of another $7.99.

We then explored alternative sources of content and soon found something worth watching.....

Watching Rocky Balboa straight after the original Rocky, I was reminded how well these two movies work together. In my view, Rocky Balboa is the perfect sequel to Rocky - especially when you watch them back-to-back as there are a lot of direct nods to the original film in Balboa. t's like the 4 additional films in the middle of these never existed.

And Balboa leads beautifully into Creed, which is a great film.

I have no interest in Creed II which is getting only average reviews. For me, these three films make for a complete Rocky trilogy, no need to look any further.

Good time to start now then....just watch the two called Halloween and skip the rest :)

The first one is more atmospheric than anything else.  The acting isn't great, but Michael Myers makes for a great villain and force of nature.  It's about 90% him standing around looking at people from a distance, and 10% some dumb babysitters getting killed because they made outstandingly stupid decisions.

The new one has a bigger body count, but treats Michael Myers in much the same way as the original, which was great to see.  Acting is much better, story is pretty cool.  Worth a look.

It's certainly an interesting way to show the story. I watched an episode of Modern Family a few months ago that used the same method for the whole episode and I found it strangly compelling.

We watched Seven Psychopaths last night on Netflix.

Reviews ranged from 0.5/10 to 9.5/10 but we both thought it was pretty funny and well worth watching.

The Christmas Chronicles [Netflix] 7/10

Yes, it's a cheesy christmas movie; but it wasn't quite as cheesy as I thought it might be; and I did enjoy it.

And who wouldn't want to watch Snake Plissken as Santa Claus?  (Although Jack Burton is probably my favourite character he played)

A couple on NF

Europa Report 5/10 An ok scifi movie about humans investigating one of the moons of Jupiter. Predictable.

Synchronicity 5/10 A time travelling story that is along the lines of Predestination but not as good.

Phoenix Wilder And The Great Elephant Adventure

It had Liz Hurley so how bad could it be.

Sadly it was a lot worse, truly tracgic acting and very thin and predictable storyline.

1/10 Avoid at all cost.
