Pulp Fiction 11/10

Hadn't watched this for quite a while but it is still has the same impact as the first time.

Every scene is perfection. There are some scenes that are better than perfect. And John Travolta and Samuel L Jackson are just outstanding.

BlacKkKlansman - After all the good reviews this got I was a bit surprised by how boring it and uninteresting it was. Considering the subject matter I was expecting something more thought provoking. 5/10

Venom - There was an entertaining movie hiding in there somewhere, if only it could have found it's way out. It's also unusual for a plot to be so simple, yet also make no real sense. It really seems that Marvel Studios are the only ones who can make a good Marvel movie. 5/10

Saw Green room recently. Starts off slow but once it gets going it is brilliant. And Captain Picard as a neo nazi gang leader.... priceless.

I am in dismay at the lack of decent story writing in most modern big budget movies -- story eclipses special effects in my view. Fortunately, you can still get some good stories in lower budget movies.

Quentin Tarantino best ever

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Netflix Robin Hood 2010 7.5/10 Mel Gibson & Kate Blanchett. Mildly under-rated. Set just before Robin becomes an outlaw. Good fight scenes. A bit camp in some scenes.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Riddick on TV the other nite. Essentially just a remake of Pitch Black, except this time the monsters only come out when it's raining.

I watched Mowgli the other night. I enjoyed it more than the Disney versions of the story. And the kid playing Mowgli was MUCH better than the 2016 live-action Disney version.

Bright NF 1/10

Storyline - laughable

Acting - laughable

Special effects - laughable

Jokes - not laughable

Will Smith has made some turkeys and this is right up there. I didn't think it would ever end.

A weird mixture of LA cops, orcs, elves and magic. So what could go wrong?

I really enjoyed Bright. Maybe not so much the narrative but certainly the world they built was excellent IMO. Looking forward to seeing what else Ayer makes in that world as there's some sequels being developed. The world itself got much more development than the characters and script I'll grant, to the films detriment. But it did tickle my D&D bone.

I wanted "Mortal Engines" to be a success but the narrative was too much of a drag. The script was terrible: it dropped almost every ball it ever managed to get airborne; the humour of the book is almost entirely lost; characters were paper-thin with strangely unnecessary roles that never led to any drama and meandered off into pointlessness; there were cookie-cut roles such as the baddy and a Dalai Lama type; and too many echoes of other movies such as Star Wars and Matrix Revolutions.

I enjoyed the pace, the music and lots of eye-candy but what really stood out were the special effects. This is the first CGI-movie movie I've seen where I never bothered to try to work out the boundary between artificial and natural - it was just so good to look at and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Should you read the book? I don't think so. The movie is probably better seen before reading the book. Then you can enjoy the surprises in the movie and enjoy a quite different set of surprises in the book.

Might be a consequence of trying to squeeze Christian Rivers into a directing role, when he seems to have much more success in a supporting role. Funny I remember my brother threw a party in Wanganui when he was at secondary school, and Christian was one of his classmates. I arrived home the next day (I was about 10) to find a bunch of people sprawled over my lounge in various states of consciousness finishing a keg. Christian was one of them. Next I heard of him he was PJ's protege. Didn't expect that based on my first impressions :)

I haven't seen the film, but your summary is exactly what I am expecting. I've never enjoyed (or rated) any previous scripts from Boyens/Walsh - they have always felt one-dimensional and lacking any real character development or plot. But they have always been matched against some of the very best visual effects, which helps mask the script shortcomings.

I think it's hard to justify that position when you consider films like Heavenly Creatures and the Rings trilogy.
