Fair comment on Heavenly Creatures, it's a very good film and, for me, the only exception.

The Rings trilogy scripts bored me to tears - if I was to sum their plots up it would be: wander, wander, rest, wander, fight, wander, rest, fight, wander, wander etc. I gave up watching any of their films after the first Hobbit which also bored me to tears. That said, I'm not a fan of fantasy films in general, so accept I'm not the target market.

Good to know, and I know my wife would be keen on seeing it... but searching for this indicates it's called 'A Simple Favour' - is this one and the same?

I enjoyed all three Lord of the Rings movies, I didn't much care for King Kong (way toooooo long) and I found all of the hobbit movies bored me to tears.

Yeah a Simple Favour is the name of the movie

After the Rings trilogy Peter Jackson went full George Lucas. Never go full George Lucas.

Sure did. Jackson became obsessed with 3D cameras and 48 frames per second projection and god knows what else. Rather than remembering what really makes a good movie. See also James Cameron.

James Cameron still knows how to film impressive action sequences.

But we'll see how I feel after the four Avatar sequels!

EDIT: And while I feel, as a general rule, 3D sucks - Avatar was one of the few I've seen that it was actually done quite well.

Assuming we haven't all died of old age by the time Cameron gets another movie out in the cinemas!

Mortal Engines. Got panned, but I didn't find it too bad. The scale of everything was amazing. Story was a little odd. 7.5

I've never enjoyed (or rated) any previous scripts from Boyens/Walsh - they have always felt one-dimensional and lacking any real character development or plot. But they have always been matched against some of the very best visual effects, which helps mask the script shortcomings.

 

I'd agree that the script is too one-dimensional this time but I've not noticed this problem with their other films.

I've realised that, as well as the visuals, I like the pace of his movies as there always seems to be something happening. So I wonder if the writers' characters show their character more by what they are doing more than by what they are saying and how they are emoting.

The story in the book is even odder. They dumbed it down.

Spider-Man Into the Spiderverse

A breath of fresh air compared to the other superhero movies - not that there was anything wrong with those and most were entertaining but this was something different and very, very well executed.

The Peter Parker story has been done to death and this is a great way to introduce Miles Morales. I can't wait for the next iterations.

Watch the trailer - if it appeals to you you'll enjoy the movie. 

Annihilation. Excellent sci-fi horror, reminiscent of the early Alien films. (Netflix). 

The Woman In Black 2 2/10 Netflix

Don't bother. It's filmed in such dark surroundings for most of the time it's like staring at a black screen for 90 minutes.

Shame really as the original with Daniel Radcliffe was passable.
