I guess it depends on whether you prefer dumbed down news or made up news.

That was one person, acting unauthorised, and as soon as RNZ found out about it they went back and found everything they could that may have been touched by that person.

I think the issue is news these days aren't really news. It's stories about people either being lucky, unlucky, stupid, smart or getting something for nothing.

Eg. Oh poor me I misspelt my name on my flight booking, now I can't board the plane.

Eg. Oh look at me, I have found a hack to cook eggs without it exploding in the microwave.

Eg. Oh look how badly I have been treated by this bank... (small detail: I didn't pay my credit card in full).

Eg. Oh look here, I stayed at a 5 star hotel for $5 (small detail: I spent 100,000 on my credit card to earn the points).

Etc etc.

They were informed October 2022.

They got exposed  June 2023.

Couldn't agree more, there are days when I look at Stuff and don't click on a single headline its so full of crap, and that's with my Chrome Kardashian filter plug in loaded to the hilt, filtering out Kardashians, Royals, Reality TV and a piles of other garbage.

Hot off the press from Stuff:

Passengers drink plane dry of booze in less than 30 minutes

Newsworthy apparently.

Should I tell them that I have run out of milk in my fridge in record time?

Have you taken a step back and considered why these stories get published? It's not because journalists want to publish them, they are the sort of stories that people read and watch.

You can blame "the media" but it's the consumers who drive this.

Well, that is true to a point. It's called clickbait for a good reason, and clicks sell ads and subscriptions only cover so much of the cost. The thing is, news used to cost to consume, ala newspapers. When they moved online, for the longest time, there was no cost for it, which was a mistake. As the revenues dropped, so did the number and quality of reporters who were employed, which creates a downward spiral, as when asked to pay, people looked at the content and were somewhat reluctant (understandably). Rinse and Repeat.

It comes back to consumers. They are getting what they are willing to pay for or engage with. It's the same as reality TV. It's cheap to produce and lots of people watch it. Other more costly and "worthy" content doesn't rate as well so that doesn't get made.

Going back to my newspaper days the Masthead price at the newstand didn't even come close to meeting the cost of distribution. The advertising paid the costs and in particular the classified adverts. I feel it's the same with TV. For free to air TV the only contribution the consumer is making is through taxation which is out of their control.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

The "contribution" of the consumer is their attention. TV is doing whatever they can to get attention while the price they get for that attention has fallen off a cliff.

A lot of people seem to have missed the fact that Stuff has recently changed their business model. Their serious news is on the paywalled sites with local newspaper branding, while the Stuff branded site is used primarily to host their non-premium content.

The lack of intellectual content on the Stuff branded site is an intentional commercial strategy and should not be a surprise to anyone.

The consumer doesn't make any contribution through taxation for free to air TV unless you're referring to NZ On Air.
