Drought fueling spread of fungus that’s making people sick across California: Despite the dangers of the disease — which can severely infect not only the respiratory system but also the skin, bones and brain — the researchers identified proactive ways that workers can protect themselves, such as minimizing time outdoors during dusty periods and wearing face coverings.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

SATTV: Assuming 100% duty cycle ( which they never are ) that towel rail is only using 2 units / day ( Max )

I believe the majority of NZ's towel rails are 100% duty cycle just like a light bulb. Rails with built in cycle timers are a relatively new thing in NZ.

https://ask.mercury.co.nz/app/answers/detail/a_id/364/~/cost-guide-for-running-appliances

Appliance               Usage          Costing        Time frame

Heated towel rail    2 1/4 units    51c to 86c    Per 12 hours

The upper estimate assumes a unit cost of $0.40c per kwh. Mercury GloBug customers in some districts are paying $0.35c per kwh.

As an upper price estimate for 2 1/4 units that is more or less correct.

This is where Mercury is wrong. A heated towel rail using 2250 watts in 12 hours means - calculations were made for a 187W towel rail.

There is no such thing as a 187W rail. You will try hard to find any towel rails above 80W. It is an error.

Plain wrong information was provided by Mercury.

An 80W rail running 24/7 365 will use 700kw in a year.

At Mercury's most expensive rate - some GloBug users - that is going to cost $275 per year.

At Mercury's least expensive rate that is going to cost $160 per year.

Mercury's incorrect page estimates $373-$627 per year for a rail running 24/7. That is plain wrong.

Mercury needs to fix and review that page. I'd be very surprised if there is only one error on it.

Stuff have correctly reported the information provided by Mercury and ended up with an incorrect headline and incorrect advice as a result:

Stuff: The unassuming appliance costing Kiwis up to $620 a year: According to Mercury, leaving a standard 80-watt heated towel rail running around the clock costs between $1.02 and $1.72 a day. That mounts up quickly over a month, adding between $30.60 and $51.60 to your bill. Here’s an even more brutal reality check: On those numbers, your towel rail could be costing you almost $620 a year.

Wrong. The article is based on incorrect information provided by Mercury Power.

Ahh, nope. A towel rail (or any other appliance) does not use 2250 watts in 12 hours. It could use 2250 watts for 12 hours, but that would be a very hot towel rail, or it could use 2250Wh in 12 hours, making it a 187W rail (also pretty hot, but not the previous scorcher).

There are higher wattage towel rails out there. The tall ladder style by Elite are mostly over 100W topping out at 215W for a 1600 x 600 model.

A story today in NZH about the TV quiz series The Chase says:

Two contestants have won the show's biggest-ever jackpot with a six-figure sum. Contestants Karen and Ian took home a record-breaking £100,000 - the British game show’s largest prize ever.

The last time a team took home a six-figure prize was in 2018, when a group of four contestants outsmarted Ann Hegerty - AKA The Governess - and split £100,000 between them. At the time, it set a record for the largest jackpot in the show’s history.”

However a quick search shows that three contestants won £120,000 last year. In addition, as a shot in the foot, the story even contradicts itself by saying: “… in 2018 a group of four contestants… split £100,000 between them”. So on two counts the current £100k isn’t a record-breaking biggest-ever prize at all.

Say anything for a bit of click-bait.

Good point. They are not hard to find. But,

All Elite models except single rail come with a timer. The site does not give the default duty cycle.

I'd take a guess at 50% duty cycle although in practice that is usually decided by the installing electrician and stays that way.

I see Elite also provide 12V rails with no indication of a timer for those.

“Consumer prices manager James Mitchell said the average price of a 250g block of chocolate was up 20% over the year.

The average price of a block had risen from $3.27 in mid-2006 to $5.56 in August.”

Whilst I agree about sensational headlines used to drive clicks, this does math to the largest prize per person.

(100K / 4 people) < (120K / 3 people) < (100K / 2 people)

The latest winners took 50K each; more each then the previous winners, even if the prize pool was the same or smaller.

Yep - I was aware of that - but that’s not what they claimed/said. Didn’t mention anything like that.
