MadEngineer: Damn onions.

If you mean their processing, I have a tip for you to breathe only through your mouth instead of your nose when cutting the onions. This reduces the effect. If you mean by-products after consumption, I have no special advice for you. 😆

I think it was neither of those; I interpreted it as the "ninjas are cutting onions somewhere out of sight" meme where you read something and start to cry.

Interesting, apparently fixed expression, but difficult for me to recognise contextually for several reasons. Thanks!

That the WAN failover to WWAN secondary when the fibre link went out worked totally transparently, I wasn't even aware that it had occurred until I got pinged to say the primary was restored.

I mean, an IT backup system that actually worked when it was needed. No fiddling around or reconfiguring or anything, it just worked.

I think I'll buy a lotto ticket tomorrow.

What do you want with it? Due to the successful failover, the probability of a second time is totally low, isn't it? 😉

The plus side of a travel disruption. So many people doing their best to help you.

  • The AirNZ Chch airport staff for arranging alternate transport and giving us snackpacks and lunch vouchers
  • The coach driver who took  us from Christchurch to Invercargill for taking to us to MacDonalds feed and then dropping us at our motel in town rather than dumping us at a deserted Invercargill airport.
  • Sharon at the Balmoral Lodge in Invercargill for arranging a last minute reservation with an out-of-hours check-in.
  • Robin at the Red Tussock motel in Invercargill for accepting a last minute reservation change from two nights to one and only charging us for the one night, and talking us through how to change it on Booking.com so he didn't get charged their commission for two nights
  • The team at Avis Invercargill airport for holding our car reservation and letting us collect it at 7am the next day when they officially don't open until 8.
  • A fellow traveller (didn't catch her name) and her husband, Invercargill residents, whose husband offered to go to Avis to collect the rental car keys on our behalf ( we decided that wouldn't work because Avis didn't yet have my driver's licence and payment details).
  • Matthew, a fellow traveller who, without hesitation, offered a lift to Bluff for Marybeth, another fellow traveller (yes, she's American) who had to get there that night for an early morning ferry to Stewart Island, from said deserted Invercargill airport at 21:40 on a Sunday (unclear whether he was actually intending to go there or not).

As a bonus, it was a scenic, comfortable ride and I got to see a little bit of Oamaru, a place I'd only driven through once before, where we had a rest stop for 30 minutes.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

Had a brief but enthusiastic shower a bit before sunset. The sun comes out, invisible and low behind the hill. It illuminates a neighbours still wet palm trees and they are transformed to shimmering fronds covered in little glistening golden lights swaying in the breeze. Lovely.

My cat, who annoys the hell out of me, can be irresistibly cute at times. Lately he has taken to burrowing under the covers, then peeping out with his one eye. It makes me smile every time!

I have an almost 20 year old F&P oven, blown grill element and missing a little screw that holds the back plate on. All parts still available new and not at unreasonable prices. Man I miss the NZ made F&P.

I will pass your thanks on to Paul. I've just started working for F&P and one of my team members is responsible for planning parts supply globally. All 174,000 parts going back up to 30yrs in some cases. There are some parts that are unavailable but most still are. When an appliance goes out of production we will assess parts availability and if there is a risk the manufacturer will no longer supply a part we will place a one time buy. In some cases up to 15yrs of estimated stock will be purchased and stowed away at the back of the warehouse. There is still a small engineering space down the back of the East Tamaki site where some parts can be machined if required. And finally, because we provide a recycling service, as a last resort we might be able to cannibalise an old appliance for a part.

It still applies to current models.  Noone stores parts like F&P does and their parts are available everywhere.

When they told me two days before, when I arrived to be trained as an professional’s instructor, that I had already had everything on board for years! 😶

Bournemouth up next. Yes, the team placed 20th in a league of 20. Be worried. And I am a fan of theirs.
