SJB:

I think you are being a bit hard on the guy.

He has made some excellent movies including

Born on the Fourth of July

A Few Good Men (including a classic courtroom scene with Jack Nicholson)

Interview with a Vampire

Collateral

Valkyrie

and recently American Made

Most of those don't have a single cheesy grin in them.

And let's not forget possibly the best cameo ever in Tropic Thunder.

A friend just recommended Rock of Ages. I thought he was pretty good in that.

Great soundtrack.

And I'd add 'Magnolia', although he is pretty much playing his real life alter ego

Holmes & Watson. 3/10 Really dire, if you've seen the trailer then you've seen the best parts of the movie.

I'd second this list.  These days he's pegged as an "action star", but take a look at his IMDB page and you realise that for the first 15-20 years of his career he did mostly dramas (with the occasional rom-com-dram film - e.g. Jerry Maguire, Cocktail, etc)  It was only really with the first Mission Impossible that he started moving into the action genre, and it wasn't until MI2 in 2000 (19 years after his first film) that he got properly action-y.  Even "action" films like Top Gun and Days of Thunder were more about the drama of the story than the action, at least as far as TC was concerned.  The whole "Tom runs" meme really doesn't come into the frame until you get to films like Minority Report in 2002 (with, perhaps, an exception for The Firm in 1993, where he does get his sprinting shoes on near the end of the film).

I saw Captain Marvel this weekend...I wasn't expecting much as all the over-hyped movies have been a disappointment (see Black Panther).

I actually really enjoyed this...it was more akin to Guardians of the Galaxy than the more "socially important" movies that Marvel have come out with lately.

I'd give it a solid 8/10

yep totally agree - Captain Marvel 8/10 was a good watch. Enjoyed the humour as it wasnt OTT great soundtrack and i liked the storyline. Loved the cat.

Also watched Priscilla queen of the desert re-master on blu ray - great colours and not a bad transfer...

The Deminer on Rialto channel sky 8/10

Documentary about Iraqi mine clearer.
Lots of footage of clearing IED using nothing more than wire cutters.

Obviously quite tense watch. Some insight into why he was drawn into this work despite wife kids at home.

Surreal moments of getting phone calls from loan sharks at home asking for repayments while standing in mine laden houses.

Most toe curling in when they hear cell phones ringing knowing that that's how ISIS detonated the bombs.

Watched quite a few lately.

Gravity 7/10 Better than I expected. Visuals were pretty amazing and Sandra Bullock wasn't quite as irritating as usual. In fact IMO she was quite good.

Coherence 7/10 Interesting low budget sci-fi effort using the 'handicam' method. Story involves multiple dimensions in an eventually interesting storyline.

The Stepford Wives. 1/10 The Nicole Kidman remake. Avoid.

The Butterfly Effect 7/10 Stars Ashton Kushner as a university student who finds he has the ability to travel back in time to try and fix bad situations that occurred in his past. Unfortunately every attempt has some serious side effects. A harmless way to pass a couple of hours.

The Madness of King George 8/10 Excellent period drama about an illness contracted by George III which made him appear insane and the subsequent plot by his son and Parliament to remove him. Nigel Hawthorne in the starring role is very good.

Ready Player One 7/10 Steven Spielberg's computer game sci-fi adventure is not quite as engaging as I had been led to believe it might be. Graphics are incredible though. They must have cost a fortune to create.

Serenity 6/10 Another sci-fi adventure with the crew of an outlaw spaceship protecting a teenage girl who has physic and other powers. Pretty standard fare.

Went and saw Daffodils this weekend with the wife.

I went in with little knowledge of what it was about and zero expectations.

Came out having just thoroughly enjoyed a good romantic yarn about a couple in Hamilton who sang a bunch of kiwi classics along the way.

If musicals aren't your thing, avoid - but if you like a good kiwi movie that's a little different, go give this a bit of your time.

8/10

The Silence NF 4/10

Typical NF offering, made to a smallish budget and to a predictably familiar pattern. Creatures released from a cave (similar to those in Pitch Black but less scary) start killing all and sundry.

Am I the only one who's starting to get bored with the NF home produced stuff already? And the UI is just awful.

Watched Wreck-it Ralph 2; Ralph Wrecks the Internet on iTunes.

I enjoyed this more than the original. It's a kids movie but there are some funny moments that are definitely for the parents.

Some funny pop-culture references too. 7/10

I'd second this; I was nonplussed by the original, so was surprised that the sequel was so enjoyable. My kids (nearly 8 and 11) really liked it too.

The Highwaymen on Netflix - 7/10 Kevin Costner, Woody Harrelson, Kathy Bates. Would have given it a 8/10 but I felt that all 3 walked their way through their roles with no effort.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
