Why would I want to waste 20 minutes of my life?

From: https://www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/360459985/explosions-heard-fire-tekapo-army-camp

Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson believes the access point is difficult, he says “a lot of our fire fighting tactics will be from the ear.”

Note the bit I underlined and bolded!

Interesting tactics! Listen to the fire?

Saw a Stuff article (on paper) on the current comet situation. An expert on heavenly bodies told the readers the comet comes every 80,000 years.

Then proceeds to say , and I'm paraphrasing here , "You would have had to have been alive 80,000 years ago to have seen it last time and you won't see it until another 80,000 years from now".

Just to spell it out for people ... sheesh.

I think RNZ described it as a once in a lifetime event. Longevity anyone?

TinyTim: I think RNZ described it as a once in a lifetime event. Longevity anyone?

I guess if you do see it, it will be only once in your life. However the vast majority of people will not see it in their lifetime.

This sentence makes no sense as it is. I guess Stuff wants to convey that [Nate] Silver is among the few polling experts who predicted Trump's victory in 2016. But they use "only"

"Silver, 46, has forecast the outcome of most US elections over the past decade and a half and is one of the only polling experts to have predicted Trump’s victory in 2016."

No mention that this time Nate Silver is now associated with Peter Thiel. He's not making a prediction this time, he's trying to influence the outcome.

Waikato man in his 70s allegedly caught with fireworks in pockets and a bomb in his lounge

A man was so sick of being burgled he allegedly built a homemade bomb capable of wiping out everything in its path for a kilometre [...] the bomb squad went inside where they allegedly found a pipe bomb.

The stupid... it hurts.

What I want to know is where did he get the Californium from to make a pipe bomb like that?

What was he packing!!??

A quick google tells me the atomic bomb dropped over Hiroshima "wiped out" everything in a radius of approximately 1.6km - so roughly half that is around 7,500 tonnes of TNT.

What the actual firetruck!?

I think that's supposed to be humour.

Fail to be so, IMO

So far, 2000 tyres, 17 vans, two trucks, eight trucks and a range of other items had been removed from the property.

How many trucks?

The headline reads; Residents saved from balcony as Kāinga Ora apartment in South Auckland goes up in flames

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/kainga-ora-apartment-in-south-aucklands-otahuhu-up-in-flames-residents-rescued-from-fire/ISZMDYBE2ZGBXNJWQNS72O72JU/

Were the residents saved from a balcony that was threatening them or were they rescued from the balcony?

Seems they were rescued.

To be saved from something infers that something was endangering whom or what ever was saved.

I know my England isn't top notch but I expect people who's craft is writing to use the English language better than this.
