I think it because they will never allow Peter Parker to grow up. In every film, he never seems to progress towards adulthood.

Which is a shame because the original material of Peter Parker is that he's a science genius at the level of a Tony Stark / Reed Richards. So he's like the ground level version of them. The movies always make him out to be a bumbling awkward teenager. The recent PS4 Spider-Man game totally gets Peter Parker right, bang on. Wish they could take their lead from that version in the cinematic world.

There are "smartest man in the room" references in Far From Home so maybe that are heading that way.

If you really want a grown-up Spiderman then into the Spiderverse has you covered. Multiple times over.

I agree that the awkward bumbling teenager thing isn't charming, it's annoying and Spiderman suffers for it. I agree the game is lot better balance.

Earlier versions of Spiderman (Dunst era) were at least considerably less "grating", and the chemistry between SM and MJ was a lot better.

I found her eyes distracting. I know they did it to match the anime but it still just looked weird.

I think there was talk that they wanted to do a couple of sequels but I don't know if they've actually started on them yet.

Working class brothers, split up as children - one goes on to be a Bond-esque spy and the other remains a Liam Gallagher type of common Northener.

They meet up after many years and chaos ensues.

It's ridiculous. It's crass. It's largely unnecessary.

I quite enjoyed most of it.

I gave it a 3/10 in IMDb, only because of Mark Strong and some of the action scenes. Never actually finished watching it, it was so puerile (childish, immature, infantile, juvenile, babyish; silly, inane, fatuous, jejune, asinine, foolish, petty)

It was an absolute waste of Mark Strongs talent.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

First Man - 5/10

Well before all the wall-to-wall coverage around the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, I had been reading and watching lots of stuff about the Apollo missions. In particular, I finally re-acquired From the Earth to the Moon, the HBO series from 1998, which I still really enjoy. So when I finally sat down to watch First Man, I was geared up for something good.

Sadly, though (and that's exactly the right word), it wasn't particularly enjoyable. While the cinematography was fine, and the emphasis on POV shots and extreme closeups showing the engineeredness of the space vehicles was a more visceral experience than most other representations of the flight experience, the story felt so bland and uninteresting, and the acting so wooden, that it just became depressing.

The story focusses on Neil Armstrong, almost to the exclusion of any other character, even his wife, and the events which the story are based around - you know, that little thing of landing on the moon - are treated almost casually. I know from other documentaries and books that Armstrong was a very reserved, perhaps taciturn, person. But as portrayed by Ryan Gosling he's virtually comatose. He only has one expression - moochy, bordering on clinically depressed. If this movie is to be believed, he barely ever smiled, continually moping through life. It's understandable that the death of his daughter had a tremendous impact on his life, but by making this the driving aspect of the story the significance of the achievement gets totally lost. When the crew are boarding the rocket, when they are preparing to launch the LM, and when Buzz and Neil finally step foot on the moon, they are so sombre it looks like they are being sent to the gallows. Even Michael Collins, who comes across in interviews as the joker of the crew, barely registers an emotion. It's almost as if the film deliberately sets out to make the most emotionless story possible.

Would it have been so bad to lighten the mood a little? To show Neil's determination in the face of his loss? I feel like the film got stuck on one aspect of the story, and forgot about everything else.

There's a few Alita stories and there was talk from James Cameron about adapting them for sequels but can't see it happening based on how poorly Battle Angel performed.

Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw - 6/10

By the trailers this looked to be good for some dumb fun. On the "dumb" count it's fine. It's certainly not going to win any awards for writing or subtle plot. And I'm sure CinemaSins will have a field day with the plot. On the "fun" count, though, it wasn't as much fun as I was expecting. I've watched all the F&F films, and gone along with the stories as they got more and more fantastical. And I quite like both The Rock and Jason Statham. But something was missing here. A few people have suggested it was missing the rest of the F&F cast, but I'm not sure that's it.

Idris Elba did okay as the villain (supervillain?), and it's clear he didn't really care that things were getting more than a little bit silly. Vanessa Kirby as Deckard Shaw's sister Hattie was fine - I'd be happy to see her in more things. One of the redeeming things from the film was the presence of some unannounced cameos. I accidentally stumbled on one the day before I saw the film, which spoiled it a little. It would have been a lot better if I didn't know about it in advance. I'm not going to spoil it for anyone (though it doesn't make any difference to the [cough] "story").

Funeral in Berlin (1966) 7/10

Based on a Len Deighton book and produced and directed by Guy Hamilton and Harry Saltzman of the James Bond franchise.

This is a great cold war spy drama with a touch of the James Bond cheek. Michael Caine is the lead and I reckon if he did not have that cockney ascent he could have played JB 007.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
