For the past few weeks, I have been commuting to and from work due to relocating. The experience of traveling across our breathtaking countryside has given me a fresh outlook on the low sun. Occasionally, I feel compelled to stop and capture a photograph of the resulting radiant toetoe or the verdant grassland peppered with sheep and their similarly glowing coats.

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.

Same here, but luckily we've got fold-down sun visors for that.

We are replacing the last two ACs at my house.

We've had good weather, only getting into the high 20s, so we've gotten away with it, despite April normally being when it starts to get hot.

We should be running, Inshallah, tonight.

That the public parking areas on our street have now been prioritised for residents with a low-cost annual parking permit.

So slowly, the constant parking of professionals from other parts of the city and towns had become far too much for P+R. And since parking fees are now charged, suddenly the spaces in the street are tolerably free again.

neb: The fact that you can build almost an entire boat out of bog. There's a vague outline of fibreglass under there somewhere, but it appears to be mostly bog.

And here's a photo of the HMS Bog, which has recently been significantly reinforced structurally by the council using a large yellow abandoned-vehicle notice:

Boat looks ok but getting it to the boat ramp will be a challenge.

Nah, as long as they keep that particular tyre firmly pressed against the curb with the street-side one providing the vertical support I reckon they can manage it.

HMS Bog is a nautical long-term corrosion test! Do not remove! :-)

Had the contractors in today and got 20 big bales of silage out of late season grass in our big field. Excellent.

Just turned on the TV here (in our exchange home in England) to watch the BBC morning news. The TV has the iPlayer app installed. If I turn on the FTA live version of any BBC programme (outside of the app) at any time while that programme is running, a pop-up on the screen gives me an option to press the green button on the remote, to re-start that programme from the beginning using iPlayer. The TV automatically switches to the app and plays - and then I can pause, RW, FF etc at will.

This is a very cool feature in a well-implemented, grown-up app. Of course the app also has all the usual ‘on demand’ functionality. Makes some of our offerings at home - even newly-released ones - seem pretty meh.

Not to mention the pleasure of watching excellent news and other FTA or streamed programming all without ads.

BBC revenue £5.3 billion a year. Around 70% is from license fees.

TVNZ + RNZ around NZ$370 million

It says it all really.

True but it doesn’t explain why with their revenues, which must be at least similar to BBC, the three national networks in the US can only produce largely crap television.

Are you saying that if they didn’t have to rely solely on ad revenue, the US networks would produce (what we might regard as) higher-quality programming?

I'm gonna say no.  If they could, they would already.
