I feel it's the same with TV. For free to air TV the only contribution the consumer is making is through taxation which is out of their control.

The consumer doesn't make any contribution through taxation for free to air TV unless you're referring to NZ On Air.

Yes NZ on Air

I guess it depends on whether you prefer dumbed down news or made up news.

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/491843/pro-russia-edits-at-rnz-may-have-been-happening-for-years

I think the issue is news these days aren't really news. It's stories about people either being lucky, unlucky, stupid, smart or getting something for nothing.

Eg. Oh poor me I misspelt my name on my flight booking, now I can't board the plane.

Eg. Oh look at me, I have found a hack to cook eggs without it exploding in the microwave.

Eg. Oh look how badly I have been treated by this bank... (small detail: I didn't pay my credit card in full).

Eg. Oh look here, I stayed at a 5 star hotel for $5 (small detail: I spent 100,000 on my credit card to earn the points).

Etc etc.

TV3 news is getting like that.  Of course since there is no click bait, what they do (and most news stations) is do teasers at the beginning or before an ad break so some people feel compelled to stay tuned to see the actual item.

With Stuff taking over I am sure there are going to many teaser style segments and more of the type of content Stuff is reknown for - viz. fluff pieces.

Of course if they can work up some content sharing deals with reputable international outlets (BBC, CNN?, US networks) that might help. As an aside I never understood why we need a TV3 reporter in the US reporting on US events with no real NZ slant. For example the big news is the Trump trial and it's covered by most US media companies. Do we need a local reporter over there reporting on the same news?

Or TVNZ having a segment on both the midday and 6 o’clock bulletins about a British boy winning the European Gull Screeching competition. Hard hitting stuff…….

WBD already owns CNN. You have to wonder why they have continued to employ foreign correspondents for the sole purpose of servicing NZ news viewers when they already have that capability within CNN.

WBD really should be rolling out CNN as the primary news service for all of their global television assets, with a handful of reporters in each country able to service the global network as well as providing a regional skew for that particular domestic market. It wouldn't be as localised as a proper domestic news service like Newshub, but the global economies of scale would at least make it viable.

Good! We need a lot of slow news days in NZ. A little less chaos would be good.

And through the journalism fund that the last government established, which dished out quite hefty support to the likes of Stuff et al. North of $50 million from memory.

A friend send me this link:  https://twitter.com/i/status/1782854859512840511 It's testimony to a select committee by Andrew Neil (currently Chairman of The Spectator, as well as being the former Editor of The Sunday Times and a former BBC presenter), when he was asked about what role the Government should have in propping up media organisations. I think he answered quite well.

https://thespinoff.co.nz/media/30-04-2024/reality-check-radio-is-still-off-air-but-was-it-ever-really-at-risk

This story makes a point - maybe "Reality Check" "Radio" (lol) was never in trouble and all this is just a fundraising drive; something even Sean Plunket has suggested too.

Interesting development. Glen Kyne comes in, takes the axe to Newshub, and then finishes up the day after it goes to air for the last time.

It's interesting that Glen's role title includes "Australia and New Zealand". He appeared to have a New Zealand accent, had good familiarity with the Newshub operation, and I always assumed that he was New Zealand based.

Is this change at the top an attempt to Australianise the local operation? American companies have a history of treating New Zealand like a state of Australia.

A look at the new set and what's been going on behind the scenes to stand up the new bulletin (named "Three News") before the weekend.

Outlets other than TV3 have run similar stories. I haven't seen the tv segment. Interested to see that if someone has a link. The headline on the Newshub story linked above is questionable as headlines often are.
