Well acted. Went to it as I have been a fan of Tarantino movies in the past. Didn't read anything about it and as a result spent the entire movie wondering what the hell was going on. Walked out with less clue than when I went in.

Wasn't till I mentioned my confusion to my FIL that he told me the premise that (some of it) made sense.

Everyone was raving about it afterward, but they were all a lot older than me and alive back then so perhaps that was part of it.

I don't really know how to rate it, perhaps 6.5/10

Just saw this last night. Am a fan of Tarantino and this is his best film to date. 10/10.

DiCaprio and Pitt were in outstanding form, clearly loving the characters and dialogue they had been given to work with.

I can see how the film may lose something if you weren't aware of the event it was shadowing. However, I did know and I totally bought into it.

Tarantino's only minor misstep was to give a short speaking role to kiwi stuntwoman Zoe Bell. She's a great stunt talent but, unfortunately, she showed us that she can't act in Hateful Eight - something which was sadly reinforced in this film

Actually got time to watch some stuff this past weekend........

Ma - Not a bad thriller, main actress usually does lighthearted/comedy roles so was interesting to see her change for this :) 7/10

Brightburn - Damien (The Omen) crossed with Superman is probably best way to describe - neat horror, even I jumped at one point. 7/10

Alita Battle Angel - Really enjoyed this one, story not anything fantastic but overall was well made 7/10

I don't think I would describe myself as a fan of Tarantino, but I have enjoyed a number of his films - Pulp Fiction obviously, Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill, Django Unchained, but I didn't really enjoy Inglorious Basterds and I never got round to watching Hateful Eight. Still, I saw the trailer and I liked the idea of diCaprio and Pitt together, so I gave it a look.

My initial reaction at the end of the film was... what? I summed it up for my wife when I got home (she wasn't interested in seeing it) as "a long film where nothing much really happens." And it is looong - nearly 3 hours.

I get Tarantino as auteur, and I quite enjoy some of the seemingly pointless monologues/dialogues in his previous films (esp. Pulp Fiction), but there were long stretches in this film where it's really hard to discern any value from the extended shots or sequences. I was actively watching to see if these drawn out shots would build or add to the story, but I couldn't really pick it. Maybe that's just me, and more astute film students would get it, but I suspect if there is some deeper meaning it's probably lost on the majority of the audience.

I was aware before going in to the theatre about the background historical element, but I found it didn't really help me, and in some cases I was distracted because I was waiting for the historical "event" to happen. (I'm being cryptic to avoid spoilers).

I read a few reviews afterwards, and it helped me a little to understand what I had seen. For instance, the title has (at least) two meanings. The first is a reference to the westerns (e.g. Once upon a time in the west), but the second is the "fairy tale" reference, which is a pretty good way to describe the story style. Other reviews have described it as a love letter to the golden era of Hollywood, and that may be the case, but for me it still didn't redeem the film enough.

Plot/story aside, di Caprio and Pitt are great, as is Margot Robbie. It's got a good soundtrack (as always), but for me it seems to lack any reason or driving force. It feels like a lazy drive through someone's nostalgia...

I watched Red Sea Diving Resort on NZ Netflix last week.

I'd seen a documentary on the very subject a few weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed it...even saying, "How is there not a movie about that?"

Basically, it's a story of 1980's Ethiopian Jews being smuggled to the Holy Land by Mossad agents under the guise of running a Red Sea resort in the north of Sudan.

It stars Chris Evans and a solid supporting cast and tells the story well, if not glossing over some of the plot and not really diving too deeply into the actual resort itself, which by all accounts was run entirely by Govt agents from Israel.

A fairly compelling watch, nonethless...8/10 from me.

For me, this was a solid 10/10. The best film I have seen in recent history and, in my view, possibly Tarantino's masterpiece. And a lot of reviews I have subsequently read agree with me.

But I've also read a similar amount of reviews that align with yours. It seems this is one of those rare films that genuinely divides opinion across viewers - either 'masterpiece' or 'so so', with few in the middle.

I've always thought the whole point of his movies was loads of action and gratuitous violence.

Dialogues?

This one, googled the synopsis, sounds rather boring for one of his.

Django was quite good, ditto Inglorious, utterly silly stories but that's not why we watch them, is it.

Fantastic Beasts The Crimes of Grinelwald 6/10

This movie and it's predecessor are a disappointment. Eddie Redmayne who plays the lead character adopts a very irritating acting style and the CGI action overwhelms any storyline which in this move is overly complicated.

The Long Good Friday (1980) 7/10

London gangster wars with Bob Hoskins and Helen Mirren. A bit dated now but still a great plot and acting.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

John Wick 3.

If you liked the other 2, you will love this. more and more over the top.

If you didn't you'll hate this. more and more over the top.

For me - awesome, loved it. Mythology is getting super weird, but very 'in world'.

Yeah - this movie overall was a fail. Pretty disappointed.

Even my wife who loves (LOVES) all things HP was let down. She thought it was 'ok' which really means horrible.

We would consider the acting a bit wooden now but it really is one of the best of it's generation. Bob Hoskins was outstanding being himself.
