Behodar:

In the "how does this even happen?" department, RNZ's New Zealand News page.

On a desktop, page 1 shows some headlines and then 24 items.
Page 2 shows items 25-48.
Page 3 shows items 49-72.
Page 4 shows items 73-96.

All fine so far. Now let's look at it on a phone.

Page 1 shows items 1-24.
Page 2 shows items 26-49. Item 25 is not accessible.
Page 3 shows items 49-72. That's the second appearance of item 49.
Page 4 shows items 73-96.

I didn't go any further.

RNZ has been falling apart for quite some time. Whether this is due to chronic inadequate funding, incompetent management, or something else, I don't know but standards overall have really fallen.

Probably picked up a developer from trademe who did their pagination cockups.

Representative Thaddeus Claggett, proudly hailing from Licking County (because of course it’s called that), has bravely stepped forward to solve a problem no one asked about: making sure AI can’t get married, vote, or join the PTA.

His proposal would officially declare artificial intelligence as “nonsentient entities,” which is also how most people describe the Ohio state legislature.

Ohio Seeks to Ban Human-AI Marriage: Futurism

A union between human and machine? Not on this Ohio Republican’s watch.

A bill introduced last month by Buckeye state representative Thaddeus Claggett, from Licking County, would block AI systems from having legal personhood by declaring them to be “nonsentient entities,” NBC4 News reports. It would also mean that AIs wouldn’t be able to marry a human or another AI.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/auckland/trains-on-auckland-western-line-cancelled-after-emergency-incident/EFZPOMHJSBBUXJ25INTG6UM6W4/

Calvin Tangitau and Tema Aleki were working at a nearby playground when they heard the sirens blaring and saw the signals flashing.

They were shocked seeing two cars weave through the barriers, and even more horrified when they saw a third attempt to do the same and suddenly stop.

“A few people must have been in a hurry, decided to swerve through the arms to get through, and she tried to follow and must have [seen] the train, panicked and stopped,” Tangitau said.

They watched as the train slammed into the front of the car, and quickly ran towards to help.

It's good she was uninjured, but I think she should be invoiced for any repairs required to the train.

Agreed. I occassionally use that crossing when driving to one of the offices I work at and I would never in a million years cross with the barriers down. With trains every 5mins at peak (yes it's 10mins but when you realise it's every 10mins each direction, a bidirectional service means a train passes on average every 5 mins) it's not unusual for the barriers to be down for some time waiting for up to 2 trains to pass -- people do need to be patient. The visibility from the car drivers POV at this crossing is poor too (you won't really see if a train is coming until your car is on the tracks) so even more the reason to be careful.

On the other hand this is a good reason why the Eastern Line (or technically the North Island Main Trunk deviation via Orakei) was built in ~1930 with no vehicle level crossings. The Western Line (or North Auckland Line) was built more or less on the cheap in ~1880 or so and as such isn't really up to the standards we need for the high frequency services we now have. Recent double tracking works has improved things on some parts of the line (e.g. they did a trench through New Lynn removing some awful level crossing there) but still too many vehicle level crossings elsewhere including this one. IMHO there are some (including this one) I think should be closed as there are other reasonable alternate crossings nearby that are over/under the tracks.

Extremely disturbing

RNZ: Police and Oranga Tamariki have issued formal warnings to two people at Gloriavale, after an investigation into a practice of silencing babies and children by covering their mouths and noses. On Friday, the NZ Herald reported that Gloriavale founder Hopeful Christian sent a letter to followers, while in jail for sexual offending, instructing them to break the self-will of babies "long before they are two years old".

Gloriavale says it's in the past.

The "User Guide" for a Linux-based computer, which tells you:

  • How to perform initial setup
  • How to install updates
  • How to reinstall the OS.

It does not explain how to actually use the thing.

Gloriavale is well and truly in the past.

How that place doesn't get shut down as a sex-slave cult escapes me.

I just got an invitation to an online event. The first thing on the schedule is "[learn] what you'll achieve in this session". So I need to go to the event to find out what the event's about.

They've thrown a buzzword or three into the title, presumably to attract all the manager types.

Sounds like the scam seminars of the 90s. Bonus points if you get a free planner.

The new YouTube interface. While I haven't used iOS 26, I get the impression that Google has basically copied its style, with rounded corners and everything sitting in "blobs". I've seen a lot of complaints about 26 so I don't know why they've copied it!

It's Safari on Mac OS (15) but I'm not sure whether that's relevant, as it does the same thing if I tell it to masquerade as Firefox on Windows.

Edit: Interestingly, it has the old UI in a private window.

Australian police have a reputation of abuse of power and misuse of authority. This Melbourne off-duty police officer certainly adds to that by likely official misconduct

The ones in America are even more so. Though some regional jurisdictions are apparently calling b*ll*cks on ICE tactics.

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them.
