The Man Who Wasn't There 7.5/10
Joel Coen directed film starring Billy Bob Thornton, James Gandolfini and Frances McDormand (of course) from 2001 about a non-descript barber who gets involved in murder. Typical Coen brothers story and great acting from the main players.
Have the Coen brothers ever made a bad movie?

Yes - A Serious Man.
I thought that was a bunch of pretentious twaddle (and I really like most of their movies); apparently my opinion of this film isn't reflected by the critical response!
I don't think I've seen The Man Who Wasn't There - must give it a go.
Fighting With My Family - A few friends had been on at me to watch this, claiming to be hilarious. I mean, it's got some laughs, but it's just a general run of the mill biopicomedy. I didn't realise it was based on a real story until the end credits. Probably a good thing really as I wouldn't have bought some of the story beats if I'd thought they were true.
It's ok. Good cast, some laughs, but overall just meh.
Watched the latest Tarantino movie at the theatre recently.......Once upon a time in Hollywood is an appropriate title....with not a lot going on there's a telling of a story most know. However the story doesn't seem to be a interesting one.
In regards to previous titles I'd think a lot would be disappointed in this as it's quite unlike a lot of his other movies. It is well acted but with the story itself being very slow to progress you start to wonder if it even knows where it's heading. Without a lot of violence when it does come it arrives true to form and is brutal and some may even find it hard to watch.
The story does wrap up nicely (no spoilers on how) but overall a average movie which leaves those who know where they think the story is heading feeling satisfied but those who know nothing of the background just as confused as throughout the whole movie.
6 out of 10
Last Breath on Netflix - recommended by a friend and watched on a flight. Very tense, very well made and quite moving.

I also watched this over the weekend...thoroughly enjoyed it.
I knew it was a true story and in the end credits they show how close they were to the real thing at times. Some great one-liners and overall a well-acted and quite funny movie in my opinion.
8/10.
Quote of the movie for me, "You look like a Bulldog that's licking p!ss off a thistle"...my twelve year old has memorised that one...

Apollo 11 - 8/10
I've been waiting patiently for this to arrive in theatres here in PN for a while. It premiered a while ago at film festivals.
It's a documentary using exclusively restored footage filmed during the lead up to, launch, and mission of Apollo 11. Their approach is interesting - there is no commentary or voice over, other than commentary from the time of the launch (e.g. newscast commentary), no recreations or re-enactments. It relies solely on original footage to tell the story, and communicate the drama. I found this really engaging. I've watched plenty of films and documentaries about the Apollo programme, and there are some really good ones out there. However, this documentary gave a new viewpoint - in some cases, quite literally. For instance, there is a shot of the docking between Columbia and Eagle, and the viewpoint is an externally-mounted camera. So you see the vehicles moving closer together, but because the camera isn't mounted at the point of the docking clamp, it's slightly offset. If it was being re-enacted, then it's likely a director or cinematographer would have used the docking clamp as the point of view, as that's more symmetrical and pleasing to the eye, but this "real" POV means you get up and close with a pretty ordinary piece of riveted metal. It's that ordinariness which I found intriguing, as it juxtaposed the inherent majesty of the achievement.
In a similar vein, the three main players - Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins - don't feature particularly strongly. We see some footage of them getting prepared for the launch, they feature in some of the videos filmed inside the capsule on the way to the moon, and after they splashdown and go into quarantine. But there's no POV during the launch, or showing them going through the landing procedure. In fact, the footage of the landing shows an angle I've never seen before - a downward facing camera, shot from inside the window of Eagle I think - and it's in real time. From the moment they begin their powered descent, the footage shows a time countdown (based on fuel level), and altitude. I've seen this sequence many times before, but this time it seemed to happen much faster. The drama of Armstrong switching to manual, searching for a suitable landing location, has always been played up and stretched out in time. In reality, the 1202 and 1201 program alarms happen really quickly, and the response time from Mission Control is surprisingly quick. The rate of descent seems quite high, and then in less than 2 minutes they are on the moon. No need for heightened drama - the actual, live event was dramatic enough.
Without a modern commentary guiding the viewer through events, you're left to absorb the scenes laid out before you. The scale is communicated well. There's a shot of Mission Control, which shows how much larger it was than is typically shown on film. We usually see the display terminals of the key positions in MC, and the big screens on the front wall showing the mission critical information. Here, we see a great panning shot that shows all the people supporting those people, and the continuous shot goes on for a while.
If you're fascinated by the Apollo programme, then this is a must see. It seems like there's a limited theatrical release, so if you don't get to see it in theatres (which is worth the cost, to see it on the big screen), then definitely check it out on Blu Ray when it's released.
American Hustle 9/10
Christian Bale, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Amy Adams all on top form in this outstanding con-artist movie.
Christian Bale is almost unrecognisable.
you seen bale in vice as dick cheney ?
😃
John Wick 3
Who do I sue to recover the two hours I wasted watching this rubbish?
The only redeeming feature was when an attack dog bit some guy's nuts off.
It wasn't the Director, unfortunately.
'Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.' Voltaire
'A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government.' Edward Abbey
LOL. I didn't consider it a classic, but I had an opposite view to you, and the only part I hated was that part.
I also saw John Wick 3 in the last week.
Is it a classic? No.
Is it John Wick? absolutely it is.
Gratuitous, bloodthirsty and non-stop violence with little care for the plot or the believability (if that's an actual word).
I'd say it's a solid JW movie. 7/10
