13-year-old has major surgery after eating 100 magnets bought on Temu

I understand the cautions for infants about how these little magnets can cause extreme digestive problems. But not a single word in the piece about how the kid who ate them was 13...?!

The saying 'Can we just remove all the warning labels and let Darwinism handle the rest?' springs to mind.

Ah great, that will probably mean they stop selling them here meaning its even harder to get small magnets to use for useful things that are not eating them.

They are already banned.

Behodar:

The new YouTube interface. While I haven't used iOS 26, I get the impression that Google has basically copied its style, with rounded corners and everything sitting in "blobs". I've seen a lot of complaints about 26 so I don't know why they've copied it!

Soon, newspapers will be printed in comic sans serif

Microsoft's new AI "assistant" thing, Mico.

Who needs the Ghost of Clippy?

Why does Microsoft have to infantilise things?

MadEngineer:

The ban applies:

  • to the sale and supply of small, strong magnets sold in sets of 2 or more
  • in situations where children can access them.

It doesn't say whether this is "and" or "or", but it looks like they're still available for "real" use when required. A quick search shows "Magnets NZ" selling them for a couple of bucks each.

Probably a contrived attempt to jump on the "kawaii" bandwagon.

Not a ban on Kinder Surprise as such. A law passed in 1938 against non-food ingredients contained in food after a product safety issue killed a large number of people. Kinder Surprise was created in 1974. Recently updated with a USA compliant product called Kinder Joy.

2nd amendment does not cover eggs ; ).

That seems harsh. The article doesn't mention the circumstances, or anything about the kid.

The NY Times - Plotting a Heist? This German Company Wants to Give You a Lift.

The brazen daylight robbery of the Louvre on Sunday has turned into a marketing opportunity for Böcker, a German maker of cranes and elevators whose product was used in the heist.

A day after the heist, they rolled out a new advertising campaign on social media.

When you’re in a hurry, the Böcker Agilo carries your heavy treasures,” the ad boasted under a photo of the lift parked outside the Louvre.

(The campaign was not extended to France)

We woke up suddenly last night; it seemed quite violent outside and shots were being fired. When I got to the hallway, I saw a flicker in the living room... the TV was on (even though we hadn't used it for a week). It has a paired BT, not an IR remote control, and now I'm wondering how it could have turned itself on.

Probably not a poltergeist.

Funny you should say that: I was in the bedroom the other day when I suddenly heard a beep. I wasn't sure what it was. A couple of hours later, another beep. At this point I deliberately initiated a beep on a couple of bits of equipment but they were the wrong tone. A few minutes later, beep. It was the PlayStation 5, which was supposedly turned off.

I unplugged the controller charging cable and it hasn't happened since.
