The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy describes the Marketing Department of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation as: "A bunch of mindless jerks who'll be the first against the wall when the revolution comes."

Curiously, an edition of the Encyclopedia Galactica which fell through a rift in the time-space continuum from 1000 years in the future describes the Marketing Department of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation as: "A bunch of mindless jerks who were the first against the wall when the revolution came."

Only their complaints department survived the general economic implosion of the company as a whole.

Jeep, Ram, And Chrysler Are Still Pushing Pop-Up Ads To Your Dashboard But Here’s How To Make It Stop: The autopian

Remember earlier this year when people with Jeeps and other Stellantis products were complaining about how they were getting pop-up ads on their center stack infotainment screens, like filthy animals? And they were having trouble opting out of these miserable ads? Then a Stellantis representative told me that the lack of ability to opt out was just a glitch! It’ll get taken care of! But you know what wasn’t a glitch? The ads themselves.
...
I can’t think of anything that might unite humanity more in these wildly divided times than the notion that not getting pop-up ads on your car’s infotainment screen is better, vastly, richly better, than getting stupid ads on there.
...
And yet, somehow, Stellantis is still trying to make this happen. Here’s a recent tweet from some poor afflicted Stellantis owner, showing [this month's] pop-up ad on a Ram 1500:

To match the lifestyle purchasing power of a Campbell’s VP , a factory worker would need to work 5 to 12 years for every one year of the executive.

So the alleged VP comments highlight a severe divide between leadership and the front-line workers who rely on the company’s wages and benefits to survive.

Campbell's stands by product after exec is accused of labeling it as food for 'poor people': NBC News

The Campbell’s Co. said Tuesday it has placed one of its executives on leave while it investigates claims that he made racist comments and mocked the company’s products and customers in an audio recording.

Martin Bally, Campbell’s vice president of information technology, was named in a lawsuit filed last week by Robert Garza, a former Campbell’s employee. The lawsuit was filed in Michigan, where both men live. Campbell’s is headquartered in New Jersey.

In the lawsuit, Garza claimed he met with Bally in November 2024 to discuss his salary. During the meeting, which Garza allegedly recorded, Bally described Campbell’s as “highly process(ed) food” and said it was for “poor people.”

Garza claimed that Bally made racist remarks about Indian workers, whom he called “idiots,” according to the lawsuit. Garza said Bally also told him that he often went to work high after consuming marijuana edibles.

It will be interesting here.

it is illegal in NZ to have a "TV screen" that can be seen by the driver as it is considered a distraction, much the same as Phones are a distraction.

So I would suggest that adverts are ALSO a distraction and could/should be banned here too.

Amazon Sidewalk only available in USA.

And currently Flock Safety, the American-based private company, provides automated license-plate-reader (ALPR) cameras and associated surveillance infrastructure.

Troubling Flock contracts with a mix of private entities like HOAs, property managers. Also public law-enforcement agencies or municipalities. Even when the cameras are installed by local municipalities, data often ends up accessible by other jurisdictions and sometimes federal agencies, including immigration (ICE).

There’s robust criticism and documentation of their surveillance practices, including data sharing, cross-jurisdiction access, and privacy concerns.

And lucky for us so far, I found no publicly available evidence that Flock Safety currently operates outside the U.S. But absence of evidence isn’t evidence of absence.

But remember things can always get worse everywhere

Forgot to mention: Auckland Transport has a fleet of LPR-equipped vehicles for parking enforcement.

NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) is rapidly expanding its “safety camera” program, speed/traffic-cameras.

NZTA took over nationwide responsibility from the police. It is rolling out both fixed and mobile cameras across many roads.

Their system involves “ANPR”, optical recognition of license plates, with night-vision. NZ lacks a dedicated ANPR law or robust national oversight of camera networks.

In summary local NZ / ANZ authorities are already using LPR / ANPR networks, including private contractors/ firms for data processing or enforcement

The infrastructure and appetite for license-plate surveillance is present.

If a company like Flock decided to pitch their network, they could succeed here too.

I don't understand why people refuse to spellcheck things. If you're writing a paragraph then you might have a typo. In this case it's a nine-page document and it's riddled with errors that would have been caught with a simple spellcheck.

Real estate website Zillow deletes climate risk data from listings after complaints it harms sales | Climate crisis | The Guardian

Zillow, the US’s largest real estate listing site, has removed a feature that allowed people to view a property’s exposure to the climate crisis, following complaints from the industry and some homeowners that it was hurting sales.

In September last year, the online real estate marketplace introduced a tool showing the individual risk of wildfire, flood, extreme heat, wind and poor air quality for one million properties it lists, explaining that “climate risks are now a critical factor in home-buying decisions” for many Americans.

But Zillow has now deleted this climate index in the wake of complaints from real estate agents and some homeowners that the rankings appeared arbitrary, could not be challenged and harmed house sales. The complaints included those from the California Regional Multiple Listing Service, which oversees a database of property data that Zillow relies upon.

I've often thought that you can't trust product reviews on the manufacturer's own website (what's stopping them from deleting anything critical?) but in this case they don't seem to be looking at them at all, as evidenced by a glowing review (with photo) of a product from a competing manufacturer, posted in 2024.

Sir, our bomb fell in your yard? Can we have our bomb back?

US, Israel fear leak of tech secrets from unexploded bomb in Beirut: Middle East Monitor

US and Israeli officials have reportedly demanded the Lebanese government to urgently secure the transfer of an unexploded Israeli air bomb in the southern suburbs of Beirut to its possession, fearing it might fall into the hands of Russia or China and allow them access to its advanced military technology.

,,,Israeli Air Force [targeted] the chief of staff of Hezbollah — within the group’s stronghold in southern Beirut.
...
it did not explode for reasons that remain unclear, and remained relatively intact at the scene of the attack. This has raised concern in Washington about the possibility that foreign powers — specifically Russia or China — could recover it and study its technology.

The report notes that the bomb carries a warhead “exceptionally powerful for its weight”, as well as guidance systems and technology not currently believed to be held by Moscow or Beijing — making its recovery a priority for the United States.
