They are already inside a large plastic bag that can easily be sealed. They are eaten pretty quickly. Individual wrappings is a waste.

Made in France, so I guess they need a lot of plastic and preservatives to keep soft for the journey halfway across the globe. A locally baked bread would be fresher and plastic free?

I prefer self service, no reaching up to the counter and terminal. Get through quicker. The self serve stations at NW have plenty of room and easy to manouver the chair, Countdown they are a pain with no real room for the chair and trolly attachment.

I spend a lot longer at the checkout taking their time than a minuite usually, so I would probably put the cost to the supermarket of the checkout staff at more like $5-6 per shop

For the same reasons that you get all the items from the shelf yourself, instead of having a grocer do it for you.

It's quicker (especially if you are only buying a few items), and through competition the cost savings will be passed back to you.

I could not disagree more, the self service at New World and Countown is considerably slower, when they had the 12 items and less open that was the fastest way to buy a few items.

Often I go to the supermarket and there is a que in self service lane, I will go to the normal checkout and often exit at the same time as who I would have been standing behind.

Sadly supermarkets are just sheep and follow trends overseas, I would hate to think of how much money they are loosing due to shrinkage ( i.e. scanning mushrooms as carrots or bring the barcode of a cheap bottle of wine to buy an expensive bottle of wine )

Amazon Go is bad news for unnecessary plastic use. Everything is individually packed in transparent plastic including single muffins. No doubt it's all recyclable.

If the aim is reducing unnecessary carbon expenditure it looks like a loser.

I don't know if it is conincidence but since NW and P&S ditched bags on the 1st their damn self checkouts seem to complain at every little weight difference.

I encountered this at New World after the 1st as well. Every item that went into my bag, the self checkout complained about - having first complained about the bag

On a side note since the 1st I have now purchased 4 paper bags and 2 "jute" bags at the supermarket as I haven't yet remembered to keep a bag in the car for those unexpected visits
