Sicario 2 The Day of the Soldado 6/10

Not nearly as good as the first film. Probably because Dennis Villeneuve didn't direct it. Pretty violent again.

It did have the same writer as the first film, Taylor Sheridan. I saw this on the big screen and, while I agree it was quite up to the first film, I thought it was a pretty solid follow up. I'll be there for Sicario 3

KrazyKid: I flicked on TV2 tonight and saw The Dark Tower was on and got excited. Then I checked rotten tomatoes and saw the 16% rating.
Sounds like I was lucky I took the hint and changed channel 😃

I found it a bit boring and only gave it 6/10 in 2018. That is the trouble when you try to condense a huge book series into one consolidated movie. Apparently it is being made into a TV series this year. Hope they can do it more justice.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

The original plan was a TV show + connected movie. That got whittled down to the movie we got, which clearly bombed. So now they're kind of rebooting it in a standalone TV series. Hopefully to the same level of quality as the recent Watchmen series.

Just watched The Two Popes on Netflix starring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce.

What a lesson in acting. These two should share all the top acting awards there are. Absolutely superb acting.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. 8/10. Apparently they rebuilt the Sistine chapel and it was absolutely brilliant, along with all the other sets. The script was good but not superb. The actors stole the show.

It does not matter your faith or lack of it, give it go.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I've seen a few films over the past couple of weeks.

Ford vs Ferrari - 7/10

I really enjoyed this film. Christian Bale and Matt Damon are good together, as Ken Miles/Carroll Shelby respectively. The film is an entertaining (if not entirely historically accurate) story about Ford's efforts to dethrone Ferrarri at Le Mans.

Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker - 8/10

I saw this at a midnight screening, worried that I might not stay awake for the whole thing, but it kept me entertained right throughout. I enjoyed the banter and chemistry between the core group of Rey, Poe and Finn - which is really the first time in this trilogy that they've got to work together on screen. It was a little bit rushed in places, but it felt like a satisfying conclusion to a story that started a long time ago (in a galaxy far far away).

Cats - 8/10

This is probably going to be an uncommon or unpopular opinion, given the competitive sport of trashing this film online, but I really enjoyed Cats. It probably helps to have a bit of context here - I'm a fan of the stage show, I've read the source material countless times (T S Eliot's collection of poems Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats), and I know all the songs almost by heart. I think those people who didn't like the film (weird, fever dream, disturbing, horrible CGI) are probably equally stumped by the stage show. I'd definitely say that if you don't like the stage show, then you won't find the film any easier to watch or enjoy. However, I enjoyed it. The music is mostly faithful to the stage version (though there is an unfathomable re-working of Mungojerry and Rumpleteaser's song which I didn't like), and I got goosebumps when the first song started up (Invitation to the Jellicle Ball). The sets are designed from a cat's perspective - which is weird, but consistent with most theatre stagings. I quite liked the set design, though. Taken with the music and the dance choreography, it tapped into the core of what the musical is about - the strange, ethereal nature of cats, which is what T S Eliot was writing about in his poems. That "dream-like" state is deliberately intended to capture the night-time roaming adventures of cats. Similarly, the CGI (which I was okay with), does look strange, but the blending of human and animal characteristics is carried over from the stage show. I think people who complained about hands on cats, or strange fur or tail movements, are expecting something that really doesn't matter when you remember where it comes from. I thought the dancing and choreography were excellent - Francesa Hayward, as a dancer, does really well as Victoria - a new character who isn't in the stage show, but is included to guide the audience through the world of Cats. There are many stand out performances - Judi Dench as Old Deuteronomy, Ian McKellen as Gus the Theatre Cat, Jennifer Hudson as Grizabella (with a fantastic rendition of Memory). There were a few things I didn't like - Rebel Wilson as Jennyanydots plays the role for cheap laughs that aren't that funny, Jason Derulo is underwhelming as Rum Tum Tugger, and Mr Mistoffeles is turned from a cocky cat into a clumsy, shy character for no particular reason. They left out some great set pieces (Growltiger's Last Stand and The Battle of the Pekes and the Pollicles), though they did a great job with Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat. I also didn't like the way they played up the "contest" of the cats vying for the honour of going to the Heaviside Layer. In the stage show this is much more subtle and inferred, and it felt very forced in the film. Similarly, the role of Macavity (Idris Elba) is turned from a subtle, hinted-at presence into something more overt. He turns up right at the start, and "catnaps" all the other "contestants." I think they could have left Macavity as he was in the stage show - not turning up until the Jellicle Ball when he captures Old Deuteronomy. I don't think it adds anything to the film to have him popping up all the time, if anything it robs the story of some of the sinister mystery woven through the stage show.

Despite all that, though, I thought it was really good. Looking forward to it coming out on Bluray.

Knives out 9/10. (if you are a fan of the this style of storytelling)

A modern detective story in the mold of Agatha Christie. A death occurs in a house of interesting characters who are interviewed one at a time learning about them and events.

I liked how the clues were in the open and there was no sudden unbelievable twists.

I agree, watched it the other day online, thought I would be bored senseless as Sir Hopkins is one of those actors who act so well they look lifeless, M Brando was another, Michael Douglas, there is a few 30-40yos with a similar "Method" which I enjoy.

Its easy watching, not boring, like a good 70s soft rock song, easy listening :-)

the first one godzilla (1954) was great, the americanised version with raymond burr (ironside) was as bad as the first was good.

Watched Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 version of Bram Stoker's Dracula on Amazon Prime the other night in preparation of the new Netflix 3 episode series - Dracula.

Though it stuck fairly closely to Bram Stoker's work, I only gave it a 6/10 - very disappointed. I found it quite quite puerile. Very disappointed in Coppola's version. Also it was not Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins best works either and Keanu Reeves, has most definitely improved since this.

I hope Netflix 3 episode series - Dracula is way better.

I agree it was a poor effort but I really liked Gary Oldman hamming it up as Dracula.
