The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation is now under the leadership from Ted Cruz, Republican from Texas.

Ted Cruz overseeing science is the modern equivalent of the Spanish Inquisition overseeing astronomy.

Dr. Jared Cooney Horvath tends to be a hit in organizations like the Center for Christian Virtue.

“Each generation outperformed their parents until Gen Z on basically every cognitive measure"

There isn’t a straightforward generational dataset showing every generation is smarter than the last up until a specific point and then reverses. There’s no consensus that Gen Z performs worse than Millennials/Gen X on any cognitive metrics, and spefically "all" metrics.

"Countries that adopted digital technology widely in schools saw performance down significantly; kids using computers ~5 hours a day score much lower than those who rarely use tech"

There is no continuous, comparable generational dataset supporting this.

There is no consensus that Gen Z performs worse than Millennials or Gen X on any cognitive metric, let alone “basically all.”

The ones that do only have observational correlation, not proof of causation. As you'd expect from anything before Ted Cruz, the claim oversimplifies complex, context-dependent research.

"Tech entering education causes learning to go down -- consistent for 60+ years"

This is simply false. Correlation is not causation.

"Biologically, humans evolved to learn only from other humans, not screens”

Biology does not issue platform bans. Humans also didn’t evolve to learn from books, whiteboards, or multiple-choice tests.

This is rhetoric, not neuroscience.

“Tests like the SAT were changed to short-sentence skim questions because of computers”

Evidence? No references anywhere I can find.

“All screens — not just phones — in schools hurt learning”

Overbroad and unsupported. The evidence consistently shows how technology is used matters more than whether it exists.

I don't understand people sometimes. I'm a moderator on another forum and have seen a lot of things, but today's was fun.

Day 1: Member joins the forum and makes a post that's not permitted under our rules. It's "harmless", not spam or illegal, but it's not allowed under our rules. We delete the post and send a reminder of the rule.

Day 4: The member reposts the disallowed post. We delete the post and escalate to a warning, i.e. "if you do this again, we'll suspend your account".

Day 6: The member creates a second account and attempts to repost the disallowed post again. This gets caught in the automated filter so it doesn't actually get posted.

I really don't understand the thought process here. "I can't discuss this on this particular forum, so I'll just keep trying, instead of finding somewhere more appropriate for it." I should also note that neither account made any other posts, i.e. the person doesn't seem to have any interest in the other discussions. I understand spammers trying to spam things everywhere they can, but this wasn't spam.

The person may be ignoring mail from your forum as "spam" or an automated filter may be doing the same thing for them.

It seems a little tone deaf to have the "Absolutely Positively Wellington" logo on a sign about the Moa Point waste discharge.

Oops, looks like someone doesn't know the difference between before and after.

I wonder what an advert for weight loss would look like?

Although, It does show Just how long this sort of "crap" has been going on.

The Council hasn't used the APW branding for ages , those signs will likely be at least 10 years old

I've seen "Poositively Wellington" somewhere on Reddit.

"I regret to say that we of the F.B.I. are powerless to act in cases of oral-genital intimacy, unless it has in some way obstructed interstate commerce." — J. Edgar Hoover

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Light blue touch paper." — Andrew Maxwell

Yesterday, a 36-year-old train conductor, who had been brutally beaten and kicked by a 26-year-old fare dodger on a train over the weekend, died. What is wrong with this world?

Spare a thought for the poor schmucks wading in deep poo trying to fix the problem. Can’t think of a worse job. Would they all resign?
