Geektastic:

“From New Zealand’s youngest mayor marred in first-term controversy” - Herald.

Classic schoolboy eggcorn.

The word the journalist was searching for and failing to find was ‘mired’.

Maybe but marred sort of works too.

Not quite. Things are marred ‘by’ not ‘in’.  On the other hand, things are mired ‘in’ not ‘by’.

Yep - I know. That’s why I said ‘sort of’. 🙂

I have a good friend who is a very bright guy but has a minor wiring defect in his brain. He frequently comes out with verbal eggcorn, to which he is completely oblivious - but which can be hilarious. Recently we were talking about spicy food and he mentioned ‘canine pepper’.

He has a particular problem with place names too. I have forgotten almost all of his howlers over the years - wish I had written them down just for fun - but not to make fun of him.

On this point, a mate of mine went into McDonald’s one day, saw a Smile (pronounced “Smi Ley” by him at the time) on the menu and asked what it was because he saw it was free.

it’s coming up 30 years now and we still remind him of it.

On the front page of the NZHerald website:

Wonder why they couldn't show a New Zealand (or AU) power plug and socket...

No, he wasn't sentenced in 1996.  He was sentenced to 29 years imprisonment in 2013.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Hey Google, show me a free picture of a power plug that I don't have to pay copyright on. While you are at it, run a car ad with a dog driving on the wrong side of the car. Maybe reverse it next time so it at least looks like you are trying to market it in the right country and are not just cheaping out by running something made for American TV.

What does AWS have to do with Azure, Stuff?

Oh, both are on the Internet, you say? Why not put your logo there too, then?

@1024kb I think you meant to post in the other thread: Examples of brain dead software design as this has nothing to do with news websites.
