Why not "Two people found dead at Bay of Plenty property"?

There's no plural "properties" so no one would thing "oh, more than one location?". The word "same" is redundant and unnecessary.

Slightly off-topic, but NZ keeps reinventing the education system, which caters for the lowest denominator, as opposed to raising these children up to a standard. This should all start at the family and Plunket and early childhood level and yes it will take several generations.

So why can they not just utilise and already proven system, i.e. Cambridge Education System. A system that focuses on mathematics, sciences, literacy and critical thinking, whilst also catering for our unique culture, but not to the detriment of the core subjects.

End of Rant

What the headline failed to convey was that there were 2 houses on the property. One death was reported around  3pm Thursday and the 2nd victim was found in the other house around 2am Friday.

We have an entire thread for this sort of rant.

That said, I couldn't agree more. When a child in primary school knows their best learning years are being wasted, there's a major problem. That was me in the '80s and standards have just kept slipping.

From today's Stuff article on Truckies blowing past the new checking stations...

The final 'wrap-up' paragraph manages to mangle the intended message - to say precisely the opposite of what was intended"

"The CVSCs were introduced to replace the former system of checks which involved heavy vehicles being randomly selected and manually directed into low technology weigh stations and inspected by police. The new stations use technology that was not modern, safe or fit for purpose, and had a limited chance of detecting some faults."

Not national media but this is a snip from a Metlink notification with an audience of thousands so hopefully it qualifies for this topic.  (Mod please delete if not.)

Well, they used "affect" instead of "impact", so I'll give them credit for that.

Herald headline: Toddler taken to hospital after drowning in pool at Wairarapa home

A toddler has been taken to hospital after drowning in a pool at her Wairarapa home yesterday.
Loved ones have been donating to a Givealittle page for 1-year-old Laylah-Mae after the “devastating” incident. She remains in hospital, with her mother by her side.

If the child drowned, they would not be in hospital and being flown to Star-Ship.

Drowning is death from suffocation after being submerged in liquid, while "near-drowning" (now called non-fatal drowning) describes surviving a submersion incident, potentially with injuries.

Sensational headlines and incorrect text.

You meant learnt (Kiwi British) as opposed to learned (American)

Wait till you hear about all the people who tell you how they got electrocuted by something and are lucky to be alive.

Your definition is wrong. Drowning IS NOT death from suffocation after being submerged in liquid. Someone who drowned does not mean they died. "Most cases of drowning result in minimal or no respiratory impairment and do not require hospital admission beyond a period of observation" - Starship Hospital.

Drowning - "Drowning is the process of experiencing respiratory impairment following submersion or immersion in liquid. Respiratory impairment must be present for drowning to have occurred."

The definition given in the OED is "die through submersion in and inhalation of water".

Sounds like the dictionaries are not keeping up with the science or the practice. Starship's definition is aligned to the one in Britannica, and the one that's been used by the ILSF for about 10 years now - “Drowning is defined as the process of experiencing respiratory impairment from submersion/immersion in liquid; outcomes are classified as death, morbidity, and no morbidity."
So it seems to me there's a legitimate and easily justifiable reason to use the term they way it's used in the headline. You could argue it doesn't meet the dictionary definition, but it clearly meets the definition used by doctors and lifeguards.
