Saw a lens for sale, there was no "Buy Now" but was at a $1 reserve so I put my bid of $1 on - i.e reserve met and I was leading. Checked back a day or so later and the auction had disappeared. Found it in expired listings. Turns out someone had requested a "Buy Now" so the seller removed my leading (and only) bid. Put the "Buy Now" on and theperson that had requested it snapped it up and I missed out (Incidentally, I would have been prepared to pay more than what it sold for).

Had a whinge to Trade Me but in their usual inconsistent application of their own rules basically told me, "Oh Well, he/she broke the rules, but this stuff happens sometimes" without any repercussion or reprimand for the seller as far as I could tell.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

@floydbloke,

TM should set up a system whereby once the reserve is met, you can still remove the lead bid for valid reasons but buy now is no longer available.

Yep, totally agree. This is where the system breaks down. I would say there's tens of thousands of negative feedback that aren't posted because of that very reason. It just means the next person may not be as well informed about a member as he/she should be.

Also tens of thousands of feedback posted as retaliation, when the original feedback was correctly pointing out a bad trader.

Bad retaliation feedback from people who did not meet the conditions (like 'must pick up') is a hazard but it evens out over time - those people inevitably get tons of negative feedback themselves and anyone checking trust can see that. Interested to see TM will remove bad feedback sometimes, I will try that in future for the really silly cases.

price to buy them new(at the time) was around $200

mine was second hand (obviously) but in good condition and on the auction I had put a $100 reserve and written something like

"these sell for $200 brand new, so if you get it for the $100 reserve you have a bargain!"

It sold for $300 - $100 more than they could be purchased brand new. I was sure it would turn out to be a scam, but the guy turned up, paid cash, and seemed very happy.

Once I listed a computer for $2000 reserve. It didn't sell. I relisted it for $1800 and it still didn't sell. I decided to chance it with no reserve, and it went for ~$2200.

Ive had similar things happen too.... see the same ppl watching items Im selling, they never accept offer, then they start bidding and pay more than the previous offers.

Just thought of another trade.... had one of those huge Lego Ferrari kits (the ones with the thick assembly manual and you needed an engineering diploma to follow), box had been opened but that was it, as new.
Put it on TM for reserve of $170...winning bid was $220 ($20 more than retail but these were rare to find in stores).

Guy comes to pickup and gives me the money and had the cheek to say "Think you were asking too much for it" - well, you were the one bidding. Idiot....

My one and only negative feedback came from a guy who bid and won an auction and then decided he didn't want it. I put negative feedback up about him and he followed that about me. The whole system falls over when some guy is completely in the wrong but still gets a vote.

Personal gripes:
When people ask how much you paid for something, as if that has any bearing on what it's worth today.
When people complain about he shipping costs.
When people think it's your responsibility to cover the shipping. I'm totally in the camp that if you buy something sight unseen, which requires shipping to you, then that's all on you for opting to purchase it.
That people never factor in the half an hour it took to wrap, protect and box up your purchase, and the materials it took to do that, and instead want the shipping to be just the price paid at the post shop.
When people ask how much something will be to send, without telling you if they want it parcel post, in an envelope, courier, courier with signature etc etc.

Two things get on my nerves about TradeMe.

1. People charging $5 for delivery, who then stick it in an envelope with a 50c stamp.

2. People using hotmail. Im so fed up with the problems this causes with email not turning up Im seriously considering refusing to trade with people who use hotmail.

Ive had my fair share of complete muppets buying from me who think its all my fault when they buy something they know nothing about and some have taken it further costing me a serious amount of time and money to defend myself.

How stupid people get the resources they do in this world astounds me but the reality is if you want exposure to sell something in NZ, TradeMe is pretty much the only option.

I have got negs from sellers of dollar reserve things that just dont answer emails or even a feed back when they list things for $1 res and I get it for a dollar.

My most memorable was selling item, which was sent by signature courier, and buyer wasn't home, and courier did "electronic" card to call, so neither me nor buyer knew this, but would have show on tracking search.

1 month later got email... the item never arrived - you ripped me off - I work at IRD and I'm going to destroy you.

WOW! All they had to say was it never arrived and within a 5 minute phone call had established it was at the depot... but she launched into full scale threat. I never did make a formal complaint over it.

Ha yeah we get that a lot. Buyers demanding to know my bank account number before they have told me how they want it sent, so I can go and get a quote for them....
