I think the R plate thing is a wast of time. I would like to see it come in where if you have been on your R for 3 years you lose it and go back to L.

I would also like to see it be inforced that if you are on a R and are out driving after 10pm (or what ever the time is now) and court 3 times or more that you lose the car.

I have been to a crash every week for the last 6 or 7 weeks where a person that is on a R plate has crashed after 11pm.

In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.

I think we need to get harder. I would like to see anyone breaching the terms and is caught without good reason, to lose the car straight away for say 30 days. Why give them 3 chances. I am glad that getting a license has got a lot harder, but unfortunately the bulk of the people on the road got their license when it was easy to get.

miamiheatfan: to the people who are saying it's good  , ok then, let's have them on full license drivers too.   "F" plates.

then every car onthe road in NZ will have a stupid plate on their front and back window Cool

That's just plainly stupid. Those on their full licence don't face any restrictions so there is no need.

Drivers on a restricted licence have restrictions on when they can drive and who they can drive with. Making this easier to identify is very logical.

I've had my restricted for 8-9 years, never had a crash, never been pulled over and had 1 speed camera ticket. Might go get my full if they decide I need dicky R plates.

Sounds like you're the perfect reason why there should be R plates.  You mean to tell me in 9 years you've never driven with a passenger?

+1

I would put money on that fact that you would have driven with some one in the car and that person not having a full class 1!
And i would be willing to put a bet on that you have driven after your 10 pm curfew!

+1 Again. Exactly the reason we should bring R plates in.

I don't often have a passenger, but if I do I make sure they are covered by the supervisor provision and the same again for driving after 10pm on the very rare occasion it happens.

How is getting my full tomorrow going to change my driving ability?  Its not like I have repeatedly failed the test.

If you haven't passed the test why shouldn't you have to indicate you haven't done so? I see nothing wrong with using L/R plates and figure that it certainly can't hurt anyone to have them.

I have no issue with them introducing the plates, hell it might even be the motivation for me to get my full.

I do find it amusing though that people are concerned I've been on my R for 9 years, when an 18yr old can get his full license and drive around town all night with a car load of drunk kids in the back.

Of course the solution to that is to make the deaduated scheme take 4 years to pass. But I doubt anyone in politics would want to suggest that.

This would mean everyone in Auckland has an R plate... Wink

No, they get an 'A' plate.. If it makes people feel better, let's just say it stands for "Auckland" :-)

Cheers - N

Agreed. A friend of mine just went though the process of getting her Norwegian drivers licence and not only is it very very expensive, it takes a long time with many tests in all conditions and times of day. She's had her NZ full for 10 years or so but still felt she learnt more from that process than in the 10 years driving.

Given, she wasn't the best driver on the roads before, but now? Probably significantly better.

I'm all for a longer process. When my kids go through the system i'll likely pay for professional driving lessons for them and myself at the same time. I will admit though that i'm not talking about driving around the neighborhood. I'm talking about skids/hazard avoidance/and other fun but integral stuff.

I cannot see the point of the R plate thing

I assume most people who sit on their restricted for a number of years do not stick to the license conditions of driving hours and underage passengers anyway. So they are not going to keep an r plate up on their window.

As for tolerance, if you are not confident on the road and need an r plate to identify yourself you shouldn't have your restricted license. You should still be on your learners.

Don't get me wrong I am young and i know everyone is not a pro driver the day they get their restricted but we cannot baby and hold people the whole way through the process, their has to be a jump somewhere.

Maybe the pressure of other motorist makes you take it more seriously and get the hang of it faster?

....
On a side note i wish their was an optional real driving course you could do and learn things like controlling a skid, how to regain control, blind spots, timed on reversing into cones etc as a sort of race etc etc. In a perfect world everyone would have to do it, but that just isn't practical.

I never did my defensive driving course, from what i hear it is good, but not that extensive.
