Ha ha. I do get the impression that many geekzoners are absolutely perfect and do everything correctly and are also rather eager to chastise those who deviate from their own perfection.

Exactly right ... if everyone did as I told them the world would run just great! ;-)

Lurch: To be honest I think the topic title and reaction is a little over the top. People have accidents or make mistakes, that Mum will most likely have had her shock ;-)

If you're being honest to yourself we have all done something stupid, maybe even more than once.

I hope she did .. but I'll bet money that I could go there next week and watch her do the exact same thing :-(

Imagine I hadn't been creeping in traffic and I had driven over the child, what sort of uproar would there have been ? And who out of the mum and me would the finger of blame pointed at?

Maybe not so much an overabundance of stupidity these days but commonsense does seem to be really lacking in people. That and the world being far to politically correct, can;t say or do something in case you offend a minority :-(
Here's a good example ... when my kids go to school they are not allowed to have peanuts, eggs and a list of other things, in their lunch boxes ... just in case some other kid is intolerant .. does anyone here remember any class mates dying at school cause you had an egg sandwich ? :-(

That is just wrong. You are not responsible for other kids (and their parents) health and phobias.

It's a swings and roundabouts society... right now we're adding cotton wool but eventually some social expert will suggest that letting us fall over and scrap our knees (or fall out of trees) is a far better way to learn the perils of these actions and it will lead to a better balanced and healthier society.

Fortunately evolution moves slower than politics and social policy

Yeah, that's Nigel Latta.

In the big picture I agree. We need to take risks and if we don't then the consequences for us as a society are worse.

However, with risk there is failure, and with failure some kids get hurt or maybe in extreme cases die.

The small picture is looking a parent in the eyes and telling them that their kid fell out of the tree landed on their neck and will never walk again.

I have, thankfully, never had to do this.

I have worked as a dive instructor and the risks in that industry are real. They are managed and if you'er good at your job your students don't feel scared, but the edge is very much there. On the upside many people learn to dive in order to overcome fear of water and build self-confidence, this is great. But people do drown to, mostly through their own stupidity but I doubt their parents see it that way.

You would be a very unique person who could rationalise the death of a child to their parents because benefits to society of continued risk taking outweigh their individual loss.

Even holding both concepts in my head is hard for me, and I agree with you wholeheartedly.

Didn't anybody tell you I was a hacker?

I used to watch horror movies or disaster movies or other dramas and frequently considered them to be garbage because of the implausibly stupid things the plot required a character (or characters) to do.

I was wrong.

We - collectively - are more than stupid enough to make even the shakiest plot a certainty at some point.

I heard someone say that stupidity is an element more common in the Universe than hydrogen.

True.

Sounds like a genius solution, but there'd be so much debate over eligibility critera as nigh everything would be deemed somehow discriminatory or a breach of rights, that'd it'd never be allowed to happen by the Mrs Smith brigade.

Just look how many wierdo's still complain about the "cancer causing" fluoride in the water.

These are probably the same people that claim immunisation either a) causes bio defects or b) doesn't work. They probably have chicken-pox parties too.
