minimoke:mxpress:avecha: Heard it coming then felt it. Ran straight for my 50 inch on the wall and hugged it. Blu-rays went for a ride on the shelf. Was shaken but not stirred.

Yes I would go for the telly as well.? Kids and missus can look after themselves.? The TV can't?
There are still unsecured TV's in NZ???? I'd be amazed if an insurance company paid out for damaged TV's in the future - there is no excuse for not having them secured nowadays.
OP - heard and felt it here in Christchurch. Thought it was just another wee local aftershock, but it was still large enough to rattle the doors.?
It would need to be quite a big shake to topple a tv, and I suspect that that sized quake could cause structural issues, so a tv maybe the least of your problems. I have a back tie on my tv but that is the only way to secure it, and that is only a safety thing to stop it tipping over on a toddler,, so I doubt it would stop it toppling in a big one. I would say 90% of tvs in NZ wouldn't be secured at all for EQs, as I have never seen any others in houses that are secured for EQ's. The TV manufacturers don't make any other way to secure it against eqs, which is poor considering they are being sold in an EQ zone. Perhaps it is a business opportunity
