wellygary: Such stupidity don't seem to stop NZ post, So I suspect this is not an actual OSH restriction, just that they have contracted a bunch of lazy a$$ed paper delivery people who only drive round in cars......

It would boil down time vs money. If you have to stop - and perhaps find somewhere to actually park - then walk.....to whatever box or (other) that may be there....the time taken per house may - on average - increase by a significant amount.

It may not be that the delivery people are "lazy"...it may be more fair to say they aren't being paid for the additional effort (and time) required.

Oi!!!! you can't blame someone who's trying to follow rules made by their employer/contracting organisation

I don't own the land in front of my house, so I didn't want to put a letterbox there then get told later I had to move it. To get to my neighbours letterbox you walk down the semi-steep driveway, down the path, into the entrance way to the property, it's on the side there. Must be a pain in the butt for a postie.

I'd prefer scrapping letter boxes on roadsides and having slots in the front door like the UK.

Given how many houses are in awkward locations, that'd probably result in it taking far too long to get things delivered.

But NZ don't really have rows and rows of attached housing like in the UK, and they tend to be very close to the road. We tend to have large gardens, and if a delivery person had to come into each property to deliver, it would take a lot lot longer.

It's all about some paper pusher office jockey who comes up with all these safety rules to make them selves look better and save the company heaps of money making things extra safe with no thought on how it actually impacts getting the job done.

Another good example is a particular Fonterra company enacted this bizzar rule, when traveling from your car in the car park to any building on site you must wear a his-vis vest, safety glasses and safety boots. What possible dangers can there be between the car park and the reception door? Drunk kamakazee sparrows?

what about the milk run when i was a kid (when there were bottles) we use to hang on the outside of the truck as it sped down the road, jumping of before it stopped completely and then running to catch it and jump back on , OSH would have had a fit but no one fell off and boy it was fun.

Common sense is not as common as you think.
