I've been enjoying both the latest Muse album (I don't mind the pseudo dubstep) and also the Russian Circles catalgoue.

My initial reaction to The 2nd Law was "Oh no. More experimental Muse. Bring back Absolution!". But I've found it very hard to remove from rotation. Guess its growing on me. :-)

It still does have some duds on it (looking at you here, Madness), but I think its an improvement on their last effort.

After a frustrating Monday night when the server struggled to cope with demand, I managed to download yesterday the HD audio files for The 2nd Law (one of the "perks" of pre-ordering the deluxe box set, which hopefully will arrive today or tomorrow). Wife and I sat down last night for a dedicated listening session. All I can say is - wow! There's been a lot of negativity in the "Muse community" about deviating from their past sound, bringing in dubstep and orchestral sounds. But I've never been bothered by their experimentation - if anything, I enjoy it. And this album is no exception. Supremacy, with it's mock Bond theme style, is terrific, and I really liked the dance groove of Panic Station. The two-parter finale, Unsustainable and Isolated system work really well together, and the new video for Isolated System carries on from Unsustainable, and is a really moving piece of cinematography that complements the melody. I'm really looking forward to digesting the album more completely over the next few days.

I've also listened a few times the latest album from The Darkness. I'm liking it a lot, with their "fun rock" sound harking back to the 80s, with ridiculous, over-the-top power chords. There's a terrific part near the end of the final track "Cannonball" with a "guitar" solo that's actually not. I won't spoil for those who haven't heard it yet, but every time I hear that part, I can't help but grin. Also, check out the music video for the first single "Everybody have a good time." Crack up!

I must give this album a go.

A band like that, who are so unique, are really damned if they do, damned if they don't.

If they stay the same, they become wallpaper like REM (who ad least had the guts to bow out), Green Day or The Foo Fighters; just "there."

They've got to keep it fresh not just for the fans, but for themselves.

Muse have yet to top Knights of Cydonia for me. That song is just soooo perfect!

I've seen them twice now on stage, and both times were epic.

I've only seen them once (BDO 2007), but they were awesome then!

This is my favourite track off the new album so far

I haven't heard of muse before, what would be a good few songs to listen that I might like that is most representative of their best stuff? (I could summarize my normal music tastes as Canadian Pop :))

Here's three of my favourites.

Showbiz:

Plugin Baby

Hysteria

Heres Muse being slightly more operatic and dramatic (but still good)

Space Dementia

Butterflies and Hurricanes

Knights of Cydonia

Off the top of my head: try Plug In Baby, Butterflies & Hurricanes, Knights of Cydonia, Thoughts of a Dying Atheist, and Sing for Absolution. Nice cross section there.

It's always a good argument amongst fans as to the best albums, but I think a lot of people prefer their earlier albums.  I like everything they've done, including some of their rarer b-sides.  If I was going to recommend some songs to listen to, that give an indication of the range, then I would suggest, in no particular order:

Fillip
Unintended
Showbiz
New Born
Plug In Baby
Citizen Erased
Feeling Good
Interlude+Hysteria (sounds best when heard with the interlude played first)
Stockholm Syndrome
Butterflies and Hurricanes
Starlight
Knights of Cydonia
Invicible
Uprising
MK Ultra
Exogenesis (three parts)
Madness
Supremacy
The 2nd Law (Unsustainable, and Isolated System)

Most of these songs will be on youtube, with great music videos to go with it.

They also used to include a number of b-sides on earlier albums, and my favourite would have to be Fury, with some epic guitar work by Matt Bellamy:

They are definitely at their best when seen live.  I've got my fingers crossed that rumours of a NZ tour in early 2013 are true...

And Time is Running Out - a great music video for that song, drawing on the film Dr Strangelove

I've been listening to the entire Faith No More back catalog lately, so much range and diversity across their albums.

Faith No More gets on heavy rotation for me during my summer driving missions around the country. Mostly just the Who Care's A Lot best of album but that's just because it doesn't have the more alternative songs that the mrs doesn't enjoy heh.

Thom Yorke project. Atoms For Peace: AMOK.

I am not a Yorke/Radiohead fan at all. I gave it a go. Don't let my opinion put you off.

I liked track 3, I might add it in future. It is very different to the others. The rest is a bit 90's to my ear and the first few tracks are very RHCP. Really liked the atmospherics on track 7. If I could just mix the lyrics right down on that...

The entire album is streaming until release. It is a great way to promote new music:

http://amok.atomsforpeace.info

I never would have the opportunity to listen to that whole track and pick it out without that kind of promotion.
