People, you can fill them out online if you choose to.
You just need an access code from the Census collector who will be delivering your forms shortly.
Remember theres 2 more weeks to go....everyhousehold etc etc in NZ.

jeffnz: The information you provide is protected by the Statistics Act 1975 and must be kept confidential by Statistics NZ.
Census information can only be used for statistical purposes and must be reported in a way that cannot identify you.
No other organisation ? including the New Zealand Police, Immigration New Zealand, or Inland Revenue ? can obtain information from us that identifies you.
The only people who have access to your personal information are those authorised by the Government Statistician. Each of them must sign a declaration of secrecy. They cannot reveal your information to anyone else ? if they do, they can be prosecuted.
Statistics NZ keeps census information secure at all times. Forms are stored securely and access to electronic data is strictly controlled via passwords, firewalls, and encryption to prevent unauthorised access.
The Public Records Act 2005 requires that census forms be retained. After 100 years, census forms may be made available for statistical research. This research must be approved by the Government Statistician and meet the confidentiality requirements of the Statistics Act 1975.

So the personally identifiable data (the form itself, including the name and DOB) is retained right?

[tinfoil hat] If the information exists, nothing is stopping a future law from changing the rules to define who can now access the data. There just needs to be a good enough reason. For example, counter terrorism or national security[/tinfoil hat].

Not having censuses would mean a strong incentive to radically increase data mining and sharing as governmental and other organisations would have to scrape everything they can to get the statistics they need to plan. I think that people not filling in censuses in a non-corrupt society like NZ are actually working AGAINST privacy.

Living in Christchurch, this census in particular is going to be incredibly important, I think perhaps it wouldn't be an understatement to say that NZ has never had a census which is as important as this one, and probably never will again. It will by virtual necessity reveal particularly large and fundamental changes in the social structure of the city, the knowledge and understanding of which is absolutely VITAL in the years ahead.

I can confirm this is correct. I know someone who is working for a short stint as a Census collector. They have two weeks to deliver all forms to their designated area. They each have a big area to cover so I wouldn't worry if you haven't had a visit already. They are secretly hoping you do it online as it saves them having to come back around again to collect the completed forms

.

They provide an online number if you want to do it online, and you can actually do it online at any stage from that period onwards. ie many people have actually completed this years census already...

Do they leave forms in letterboxes or do they have to hand them to your personally? God help the poor person delivering forms if they wake me up after a 12 hour night shift.

They need to make 3 attempts to hand it to you personally, and they are only allowed to do so between 9am and 8:30pm.

I *think* they will leave a dwelling and several individual forms. My wife is working on the distribution & collection and I'm just going on what I remember overhearing as she was watching the awesome training DVD so I might be wrong.

If they don't get an answer by the third visit they leave forms in the letterbox. If being undisturbed is that important I'd leave a note on the door :) That'll also work for the telco salesmen and the JW's.
