been through nearly same experience ... twice !

once with a "cheap" laptop.

second time with a stereo amplifier.

now i accompany the advice asker and supervise the purchase !

Just saw their ad with the "reporter" announcing a saving of $300 on a 2 camera analog DVR system.

The fact that it is priced so high they can take $300 off it is indicitive of the problem with dick smiths pricing. Same thing on ebay would be about $130 US inc postage.

It's a common ploy for retailers to special off items that aren't in stock, well below the normal price, all to increase pre-orders and get some 'runs on the board' for the arrival of new stock.

Good for them.
Terrible for customers / the companies reputation.

I had a great experience with DSE yesterday...was looking for a mini HDMI cable for my new camera (as usual, no HDMI Cable in the box) and whilst randomly looking online at every electronics retailer that has a physical store anywhere near me, I came across one for $1 at Dicks.

with smartphone in hand (locked on the web page that showed the price), I trudged into Dick Smith and picked up a nice cable from the shelf - marked at $19.99.

took it up to the counter and before anything else was said, showed the guy the web page on my phone - he simply sighed and stated, "That's a dollar, thanks".

Only criticism I would have - the interminable wait to be served.

I'd be pissed if somebody took my brand and used it in that childish way - dick, dick, dick.... I guess that's how the mad buthcer feels - I wonder if he cringes everytime the radio jingle goes - you can't beat the mad buther's meat?

Honestly, what does it take to be a marketing 'expert' and who sits these meetings where it is decided that 8 year old boys are now the target market?

I've been to DSE in Hamilton a few times, they don't sell parts/components anymore, all the stores now do the same thing - consumer garbage that everybody else sells. As has been pointed out, either the markup is too high or we are really a nation of junk collecters to keep these operations going. Good luck on their business model, that store's not for me.

The MButcher's jingle hook was the clients idea...
The 'agency' is part of MWorks Radio now, and they just sung the line.
I have no idea if Sir Peter Leitch was involved in the daily running of the business at the time though.
