Reminds me about a joke on how the Grand Canyon got started in the first place, but sadly I can't post it as it's racial.

joker97: There's no workers to do that to you.

Crims however ...

Yes but we have those here too - and no legal means to defend ourselves other than ring the Blue Gang and wait an hour or so for them to get out here....!

I didn't understand all the fiscal cliff business last year either, thankfully we have David Letterman to explain it.

A law that Obama passed three years ago to ensure that everyone can get health insurance there.

Geektastic:
How exactly do you close the Grand Canyon?!

I have not been there since 1991 but I don't recall gates or fences around it.

Well the south rim only has 2 access points along Arizona State Route 64, one from the south and one from the east.
Appearantly there is staff at these checkpoints sending people away, through traffic is allowed to pass through but not allowed to stop, the car parks are guarded and anybody pulling over will be requested to leave.

The north rim only has 1 point of access through Arizona State Route 67 from the north (you use the same point to get in and out) and this has been barricaded.
Geektastic:
So what do they do if you just walk through the woods? Shoot you?!

From earlier articles I've seen that they are requesting people to leave, unless you had pre-applied for a trekking/hiking permit and were already in the park before shutdown you aren't allowed to stay on site.
If you ignore them you're considered a trespasser and they're likely to call the cops.

So the US govt shuts down and:

I guess that in the US, folks will have to mow their own birms.

The feds can no longer afford to send lawyers over here to drive the KDC extradition hearings.

The feds can no longer afford to spy on our emails and phone calls.

How I grieve.

Actually, the NSA is an 'essential' service, so when it comes to spying, it's business as usual

ScuL: The biggest bummer is for tourists visiting the US!!

Parks like the Grand Canyon are now officially closed.
I don't have a trip booked over there until March 2014 but I do hope things will be sorted by then!

Over in less than 2 weeks and my tickets to Alcatraz and Yosemite are in limbo

I must be missing something here. Why are they expending extra effort to keep people out of a park that essentially runs itself (nature)?

Because there will probably be no park rangers around.
They have wildlife, unlike us here in NZ where the most dangerous predator is a possum
