I ate at one years ago in West Hampstead, the story I remember was that they were former Wisconsin (the NZ burger chain, not the State) employees who moved to the UK and saw a gap in the market.

It was well up on the this of burger experiences.

reven: I hate Carls.... wendys has gone to rubbish over the last year. BK and McDs are the only places I really go now. mcds is consistent, always basically the same basic burgers, but always hits the spot. and now with georgie pies :)

agree !

add burger fuel to that list - lately their stuff has been crap too.

those gys are sadly heading the same way as hell pizza - great when they were small and starting out, slowly joining the mainstream as the chains expanded.

I really love Mexican food ... but and it's a big BUT... I have struggled to find what I would call good Mexican food in New Zealand. Mexican Cafe in Auckland was good last time I ate there but that was over 10 years ago. So often if I eat Mexican out it seems like an excuse for lazy cooking and I know this isn't the case with traditional Mexican food.

There is a place in Miramar I'm keen to try but any other suggestions welcome.

As for In N Out, another quality burger joint is always welcome. I personally prefer Wisconsin over Burger Fuel, I find Burger Fuel patties a bit bland for something marketed as 'gourmet'.

My dream burger is just beef, salad, sauces and bun. No cheese, bacon or any of that other stuff. The thing is this dream burger doesn't need the extras because the beef, salad, sauces and bun are so good anything else would just detract from that. You don't cover a good steak in cheese and bacon do you?

I love taco bell too. If it were bad they would go bust.

I generally hate food halls in malls. However, a new mexican place has opened in the bayfair food hall in Mt Maunganui -- it is the most authentic mexican taste I've had in NZ for some time. A reason to use the food hall again. However, I fear for their future as kiwis don't seem to embrace mexican food so much.

If you're in Auckland you HAVE to try Big J's http://www.bigjs.co.nz/

Not only are they well priced (Pretty much all below $10) they are hands down some of the best burgers I have ever had. You do need to ring up and pre order them though as its typical for them to have upto an hour wait for your order on a Friday & Saturday

Never went for that one myself; as much as I love tofu, it was too much like a slab of the stuff stuck in a bun.

But it was a real shame when Burger Fuel revamped its menu (last year, was it?), or at least for vegetarians or those who like vege burgers - IIRC, the options went down from at least four to two. My favourite had been the Combustion Vege; neither of the current vege options do it for me as they come, but the Beetnick GT w/o beetroot and w/ satay saurce has to be the finest vege burger from a chain store. I'm just so over the crud vegetarians are offered in the mainstream places - a McDonald's salad burger, anyone? (Essentially their most basic burger minus the meat patty.) Of the international chains, at least the Subway vege patty is tasty.

Ho ho! Let the anti vegetarian jokes begin. Don't worry - I've heard them all as I've been vegetarian for 20 years...

There's this weird default assumption most have that vegetarian cooking is simply "normal" cooking minus the meat - given its 'salad burger', McDonald's clearly has the same (mis)understanding.

While it may not be to your taste, there are so many different ingredients one can make burger patties from that don'tinvolve hunks of dead animal! Chances are they'll be tastier and certainly healthier. Burger Fuel is one of the few burger chains that understands this.

Its like Subway, but with pitas instead of subs. And with more choice in spice, veggies and sauces.

Ironically, I have been to Pita Pit once only and that time I accidentally ordered a "humus" one (instead of falafel), so essentially ended up with a "salad pita"! So, not the best way to judge a place. I have intended to go back to try a proper meal, and on your suggestion will do so next time we're looking for such a meal.

Queen St, Ponsonby, Takapuna, did it really well 90% of the time. The one time I ate it at Parnell matched your description exactly, undercooked and terrible as.

My guess when BF started a very significant % of their business was vegetarian and vegan. As they have expanded that % fallen back as they reached a larger market and started rationalising. It would be smart to retain those options in the original branches but they may have screwed that up already long back. To me the current options are more different flavors than different options. All the same good on them for providing what they do, but to me it has not been a primary destination for group takeaways or a quick meal since CF is gone.

I have just never understood why vegetarians want what are traditionally meat dishes but with non meat items. A hamburger is for meat. So is bacon, and not that vegetarian bacon substitute crap. I mean, seriously what is the point??

Being a vegetarian is like missing a limb. Heard of phantom limbs? Your body still wants to think it is eating meat even if it isn't.

There is no point, it is a subconscious need.
