I just want to know more about the process so I can make more informed decisions. After all, $380 or $470 is quite a difference in price so I want to know the chances of getting my import fees refunded.

And, thanks to those who answered based on their own experiences :) It gives me a decent guideline at least.

Why does it, though? Most of the service is delivered outside NZ and what happens inside NZ could hardly be described as a service on most occasions!

Why not just split it into two orders where it is not a single item? This avoids the taxes and 'service fees' from customs (it's a bit rich calling what they are doing to you a 'service'!)

Distorter: "If the amount to be paid to Customs is under $60, this will be waived, but if it’s more than $60, you’ll have to pay any duty and GST. You can find out more about these charges on the Customs website."

I would assume it would cost them money in admin fees. Basically its not worth their time.

Different goods have different duty charges so the whole $400 thing isn't the best rule to go by.

In case anyone needs to know, clothes and shoes have 10% added before they assess the GST liability.

Amazon are doing free shipping for orders over 125usd at the moment :) You can get some brilliant deals right now.

yup as long as sold my amazon itself. ordered a half price earphone ... very tempting to order another one if i can't find anything else to buy by tonight :D

If shipping is free just make multiple orders below $150 or so and you should be fine!

Because even if you split in two orders Customs may sometimes add them together if they land in the country around the same time/week.

kinda related - almost bought a Seagate central 4tb from amazon ... but

does anyone buy electronics from amazon - the adapter and the voltage is different? how do you check?

The adapter will be different... Voltage will depend but most (computers and related) electronics these days are 110v/220v.

Some items need your location so a compatible adapter is included. For the Seagate "Currently, item can be shipped only within the U.S. and to APO/FPO addresses." so location check not offered.

Because even if you split in two orders Customs may sometimes add them together if they land in the country around the same time/week.

But surely that is easy to get around? Order them 10 days apart or send them to different addresses.

dolsen: You should automatically get it back according to other people on here however, here's one of my orders from 2nd October. I haven't seen a refund yet.

Import Fees Deposit NZD 88.85
-----
Total for This Shipment: NZD 452.12

Just an update on this. I received an email on Saturday (4/1/14) stating that they had processed my refund and it would appear on my credit card in 2-3 days. I have received a refund on 88.85NZD on my CC so glad to have the money back. Although not too much of an issue, they did have $88 of my money for 3 months when there was no way it should have been charged based on the value of the transaction. Having said that, I wouldn't be complaining if they got it wrong and had to top up the duty / customs fees...
