I created an amazon order where the total price came to $380nzd.   Which , is under the $400 where customs charges for gst and admin costs.

But, amazon have added about $90 in 'import fees deposit' .

So, given my order is under $400, would I get a full refund of that amount? Or, do amazon just pass that on to customs anyway?

That happened to me once, and I got a refund. It happened automatically.

They usually do refund that amount after 30 days or so. If you do a live chat with Amazon support, ask them to write down a reference note on the order as a 'promise'.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Was the price over $400 when shipping was included? The import amount includes shipping charges

Good to know it should happen automatically, the last time I went to place an order that attracted duty but shouldn't have I just removed an item

Amazon will charge the fee when it's too close to call. Sometimes Customs will look at an item (even if it comes with an invoice) and decide the invoice was under the actual value and charge the fee.

Amazon preempts that by charging a fee in advance. If Customs asks for money Amazon will pay from that fee. If there's any change or not used it's returned to you. If the amount owed to Customs is over the fee they charged you they will pay it.

Nothing to see here.

What are you purchasing? If it is an item which attracts duty (e.g. clothing) then you have to factor that in as well.

Your order (including shipping) is $452.12 so it would attract GST anyway, plus some Customs processing fee. Not sure you will get a refund on that order.

The $452 includes the customs fee; it's well under $400 for just the items + shipping. For some reason Amazon is listing the total (including the fee) above the line where the fee gets added.

You need to check with NZ customs as to whether what you are ordering attracts duty. Even if the item plus shopping is under 400, you may need to pay gst and duty if the item has duty on it. Thing like clothing jewellery etc can have duty.

Yeah, I'm wondering if Customs saw the total and decided to take the fee? That was a nexus 7, so, no duty to pay.
