Yup feel your pain , Oh my god never felt pain like it in my life, I drove myself to the hospital at 2am in the morning but my pain did not really come fully on until about 30 mins after arrving at the hospital and then no pain relief for an hour (a lot of pacing going on while muttering to myself) while I was waiting to be seen , a few rounds of morphine followed by someKetamine (Never ever going to let anybody give me that stuff again).
Next time (hopefully never) I would call the ambo's to get me to the hospital and hopefully would get seen quicker than being a walk in.

I've been to hostibal twice, once as a kid for tonsils, once as a teen for hit in head by a golf ball. I got taken from work a week or so ago, as passed out due to heart related meds. Call 111. That's what taxes are for. If we were cats and had nine lives you can chance it, but we aren't.

err, when you call 111 you would have requested an ambulance otherwise it's a given that when you call 111 for a medical emergency you're requesting their service.

I did not call 111. And upon regaining consciousness, I was pretty clear that I did not want an ambulance called, which they had already done so. So yes, illegal contract as I had not requested a service.

I was given Morphine tablets for home, and they have been a life saver, though the attacks of pain come much faster than the 30 minute time for the sevradol to take effect so I've had some moments
where I've considered trying to knock myself unconscious. Doing much better now thanks for asking.

As the unlucky recipient of Kidney Stones earlier this week which happened at 4am, we were faced with an interesting problem. Who to call to get me to the hospital. I felt fairly sure it was kidney stones (my wife is a GP) and knew even though the pain was excruciating, my life wasn't in peril. I definitely wasn't safe to drive, though and my wife wasn't able to drive me (2 very young children). In the end I called Alert Taxi's (Big shout out for some of the most impressive service I've gotten). Alert got me there faster than an ambulance I think, but it led me to wonder if I would have been ok to call 111.

The plus side of an Ambulance would have been the morphine would have got on board somewhat earlier.

I would have thought a GP would know the answer to this question...!

It wasn't a matter of if I could which I knew I COULD have, it was whether I should. In the end the Taxi was faster anyways. No way would an ambulance have done those speeds :)

So, just so I understand... You were unconscious and someone called an ambulance and you are upset that an ambulance came and the cost was passed on to you? Are you mad at the person who called the ambulance too? Maybe they will pay the bill or maybe next time you'll get lucky and no-one will bother to help you

So, just so I understand... You were unconscious and someone called an ambulance and you are upset that an ambulance came and the cost was passed on to you? Are you mad at the person who called the ambulance too? Maybe they will pay the bill or maybe next time you'll get lucky and no-one will bother to help you

Oh, get over yourself, you're just misreading what I said so that you can hop up on your soapbox. The statements are that St John are very aggressive in chasing money that they believe they are owed, despite that fact that there is no legal basis for them to actually invoice you in the first place if someone else calls an ambulance on your behalf. In fact the law is quite clear that any invoice that an organisation sends you for goods or services you did not request is immediately invalid. So it would behoove them to not act so much like prats when they send out their "invoice" in the first place (starting with a threat to send to collections if the invoice isn't paid is a great way to get someone's back up, and when you're already on the wrong side of the law, outright stupid).

Actually it's you, I believe who needs to get over themselves. You collapsed, someone else had to make a call which POTENTIALLY as far as they were concerned, could have saved your life, next minute you are using this thread as your own soapbox to lament the fact the service rendered TO YOU, FOR YOU, cost you something, and that St Johns have the need to chase money hard, for exactly this reason (People using ANY excuse not to pay).
