If your are ever in Paraparaumu Ray's Pies in Kapiti Rd are to die for. Their pepper steak beats the BP version hands down.

I'm a Jimmy's and Mrs Mac fan, however, they come second after having a steak and chilli pie made in the middle of no where by an older fella in a small tiny place called Waikari in the South Island.

I was on a road trip heading to the lewis pass on the way to the west coast and came across this small bakery. The guy had not long ago bought it (this was about 2 years ago now) and I have NEVER eaten a pie as good as this guys home baked pies. He was about to start shipping them to various places next as part of his business plan.

We bought a few steak and chilli pies and a few others before the long drive over teh lewis but we drove about 15KM up the road when we started eating them. After finishing, we both decided stuff it 15KM's ain't far (only another 30K's round trip), and both went back because the pies were that good. We told him how far we drove to come back for his pies and he sent us packing with free fresh baked cake slices and other goodies. There was a little incentive of course, we'd put it on the radio stations solcial media sites we were invovled in but hell they were damn good pies.

I don't know the name of the shop. Probably Waikari Bakery or something along those lines. But this guy makes pies like Jimmy's and Mrs Mac's are his assitant bakers. Unless I'm going through there again, I'll never taste another pie that good for a while.

edit: Or maybe it was Culverdon, one of those two small places heading west from SH1 to SH7 north of Christchurch to go over the Lewis Pass.

Just got a Pie from BP as every likes em. Not a bad pie at all, got a beef bacon and cheese one and best of all next to no crumbs in the car.

Killerkiwi2005: Ok why is this not a phone app..

That's a fantastic idea! It could automatically alert you when approaching a pie place.

Hell yes "the closest known good pie is 4.5km away @ BestBakery"

Like pizza pointer for windows phone, but for pies. Would totally get that app.

Satch: At BP of course.  Doesn't BP stand for Best Pies after all?

I thought it stood for Bee Pee which is what I understood the active ingrediant in the 98 Octane Fuel that they sell is.

Skot323: Jimmys pies, hands down oh how I wish they would bring these to the North Island!!

Where are these "Jimmys pies" you speak of?

Every dairy/petrol station/supermarket in the lower south island. Its sort of like the north islands big ben pie but you dont have to be drunk or hungover to enjoy one!

Demeter: ... don't flake all over my car ...

This is a Very Important Point - most pies probably get eaten in the car but, man, that really flaky pastry can leave a hell of a mess in there. This should be a scoring consideration at the national pie awards.

Their steak, bacon and tomato are awesome too... and I hate tomato.
In fact, I used to work across the road about 10 years ago, and have never had a bad pie from Ray's.

They're the best pie thats sold all around southland. Specialty stores are normally better, but for a pie you know you can find wherever you go they're the best.

Pie Finder 0.1 Rough Prototype :), obviously depends on how accurate your location is, a device with GPS is best

  • Got the listings of the winners of the 2014 pie awards
  • Ran the addresses through the google geolcation api with a short python script
  • A few lines of javascript to use the html5 location API to compare to the store locations
  • Use google maps to display driving directions
Will accept new locations if gps long/lat are supplied with a description and best pie
