This isn't related to Microsoft, but I've always thought Apple's CGA summary page is useful: https://www.apple.com/nz/legal/statutory-warranty/
Certainly a page I've remembered should I need to pull it out in dealing with Apple (but I haven't had any problems with them yet).

That is interesting, but I am just wondering if that is full CGA coverage. I note that it doesn't include telephone support for the claim, so it doesn't sound as comprehensive as a normal warranty. They also don't specify what they consider a 'reasonable time' for a product to last, even though they could be specific on their products. But I guess they don't want people to know the length a product should last for incase it is used by all their NZ customers, and then there is possibly no need to purchase apple care. Also maybe they are not allowed to dictate the length of time a product should last, as that has to be assessed independently.  The consumer magazine does publish life expectancy on products.

I would go to the retailer always, they probably know a lot more of CGA than the manufacturer itself. 

I had similar issue with Harvey Norman like your JB Hifi experience. It really depends on the person you are dealing with as well? They tried to brush it off while it was still under "extended warranty" that they have sold me. When I started mentioning of going through small claims court, that is when they took matters seriously and started considering my request.

I actually remember reading those posts quite a while ago haha. 
Harvey Norman is on some other level s**t when it comes to playing games with warranties etc. Never ever ever will I step foot in there again.
