I live in an apartment in central Auckland that requires a visitor/courier to use a call panel to reach the flat they want. I work from home so I am almost always here during the day. For years I got some parcels delivered while others resulted in a card being left, even when I was home, and the resulting drama in trying to get a re-delivery or arrange a pickup at a faraway depot.

Now I understand the difference between courier companies. For me Poste Haste and NZ Couriers leave a card about as often as they make a successful delivery. Courier Post (NZ Post) are almost always successful in delivering and for those times I am not at home the alternative to pickup at a nearby Post Shop is easy and convenient.

When I purchase and ask for courier delivery I ask for Courier Post. Retailers/sellers who do not usually use them have, more often than not, been accommodating in honouring my request. I don't know whether they cost more but from my perspective it would be worth it.

NZ post does seem to cost more for some things, especially if you get over a certain size it can be very costly I have found. The benefit though seems to be that they can deliver to PO boxes, unlike normal couriers.

NZtechfreak: Sounds like a rort to me, given the number of times couriers have popped one of those 'attempted delivery' cards in our letterbox when people are obviously at home and no real attempt has been made whatsoever. Which courier company was this?

We generally get a card automatically dropped into the letterbox with handwritten note saying "no access", despite the fact there's quite clearly a driveway going up to my house. It's off a shared driveway - the courier obviously just can't be bothered driving up it.

I just have to chip in here extolling yet another virtue of living rural. Our RD postie carries all the courier parcels as well, she is a local and goes out of her way to help. Always telephones or contacts me to check that I get any parcels she has left. Oh, and with RBI wireless I have a lightning fast connection compared to dialup or satellite!

I thought second delivery attempt was already built into the overall costs for the service. No doubt we won't see any price decrease if this does happen with some couriers

Unless ou are waiting by the front gate at the letterbox, you will always have to pick it up from a postshop, and it will always be the next day. The system is a bit of a mess. Perhaps courier companies could band together have have pickup places around the city.

NZ post always comes to the door for signed packages, I've had the odd time I've been out and it gets delivered to the main post dispatch building. But they're open from 7am so I can collect on the way to work. Or they are open Saturday.

Another +1 for delivering at work. Not sure why you wouldn't use your work place for delivery especially as a matter of course you'll have cctv footage.

Not if they are on a bike, as they are not allowed to leave the bike and mail unattended incase it gets stolen. At least that is what I was told by the,..Depends on the situation though, because they maybe able to walk the bike to the door.

Some workplaces may not allow personal deliveries, and I know of some that don't. If I owned a business, I don't think I would be that happy to have couriers coming in throughout the day dropping off things for staff personal use, using up staff time.

They've always come to the door at our place they just bring their bike up to our steps and lean it on the rail and knock. I have no issues with NZ post, couriers on the other hand are all over the place. We also get on well with the 3 different posties that do our street, have a chat now and then :-)

Presumably if they fail to deliver despite you being home you can bill them for the costs of collecting your parcel from their depot?

The most annoying thing is the complete lack of consistency. We are RD and have a PO Box.

1) Courier Post will deliver to the PO Box. No one else will.
2) Some couriers hand off to the RD man. Some don't.
3) Some couriers dump stuff at the local BP garage and expect me to figure out that is what they have done
4) Some couriers come to the house and just leave it
5) Some do one thing one time and a different thing the next

It's a complete mess!!

So keep putting these problems back on the sender since they are the ones paying for substandard service. They can then put pressure on their account manager to sort it to keep the business.

I have a CourierPost account and they have a key to my secure area (a shed). When a courier left they couldn't use the secure area for 6 months because they have no system in place to label keys... they had the keys but couldn't work out which key was for which property. I suggested they should probably have a national system in place, not just rely on couriers to work it out. They eventually found the key to my shed.

Chiming in adding my disgust at having to pay extra for incompetence/laziness.

Had the good old 'card to call' dropped at my house last week. Looking online the courier delivery time was 4:37am!!!! Card said occupant wasn't home, mind you just as well he didn't ring the doorbell...

Clearly just another lazy card dropper, with no intention of trying to actually complete the delivery. Why should I have to pay for crap like that? Not happy.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation
