I was in Tutukaka for Waitangi weekend. Someone was letting off fireworks from about 10pm-11pm, fair enough it was Saturday night, but it went on for 45 minutes or so. And the same type, you hear a small pzzzttt, then a colossal boom. Every five minutes for 45 minutes, it was ridiculous, sounded like it was directly over our roof.

We dealt to some in our local street (in Auckland) I spoke to 3 neighbours (around the offending house), and the day after they left a whole lot off at 2am, the three of us got up at six am, and did our lawns. I left mine idling for about ten minutes while I had a coffee to wake up. I don't think the other neighbours were terribly annoyed, we are mainly surrounded by older folk, who tend to be up early in the weekends anyway. But we haven't heard any fireworks since. The same house like to listen to their car stereo whenever they are outside the house. I have asked them as politely and civil as I could if they could turn the bass down when they're doing that, but they simply laughed and told me to "sod* off au".

There is an endless list of annoying behaviour, but its very tough to avoid the sound of the louder fireworks.

I'm sorry to say but the no fireworks since are a co-incidence. If you think these people are smart enough to have joined the dots, you are sadly mistaken :)

PANiCnz: The root cause is inconsiderate/incompetent neighbours, unfortunately every street seems to have them and their hard to avoid.

We had some idiot running around our neighbours property last night making chicken noises as loud as humanly possible untill 11pm.

I avoid them by not living in streets with other people..! ;-)

If every one of you mailed your local MP and made your thoughts known it actually does start to get through.

Make no mistake a lot of cops have a pretty good lie detector, it's not worth it I promise you.

Bit OT sorry, but Rural's not always perfect..

Neighbours son & his mates have been up. And went out for a bit of a night shoot.

Started out miles away, could barely hear them. By 1am they were shooting in the pines along our boundary (about 1/2km from the house).

Dogs barking, revving his old land cruiser to death, pop pop pop from the .22's and every 3rd or 4th shot an almighty boom that echoed for miles around, sounded like a freakin cannon..

Decided to drop over for a quick chat next day. Wasn't well received. Boys will be boys, said neighbour.
22's only & will call cops next time if not OK'd by me first I said.

No longer get 'the wave' when we pass each other on the road.
His wife no longer calls my wife.

Well actually having a fall out with your neighbour can make life very unpleasant. I'd suggest he lost something otherwise he wouldn't have raised it.

Jase2985: i just dont understand how they can afford to buy that many fireworks

we have a family about 3 houses down they still let them off occasionally. but they are hardly in a position to be able to afford the amount they buy going off their current housing situation/social socioeconomically status

Most likely a nearby business that was selling them had a few dozen boxes left over and they are getting rid of them for $5 a box to mates.

Rather than complain about the noise, ask them if they can help you to get a couple of boxes for a birthday that is coming up. If you can ID the source then you can ask the police to investigate the illegal sale.
