So, four glasses of wine or 4 beers in a 4 hour ferry trip! Sorry but they will be under the legal limit to drive. you might not like it but  they are quite within their rights to drive.

If the numbers showed a spike in crashes between Picton and Blenheim related to drink driving on the ferry then the cops would object to the on licence being renewed on the ferry. Since that hasn't happened I would say nothing to see here... move on

Exactly.

This entire thread is based on one person seeing another drink what he thought was an excessive amount. Then he decided that this person was driving based on the fact he saw them drive on the boat. No thought was given to the fact there are 1600 other passengers on board and maybe, just maybe, the OP may have gotten it wrong.

The cotton wool brigade needs to be taken down as swiftly as possible and people should be left to make their own decisions.

Its the "I am incompetent therefore everyone must be" type of thinking.

chevrolux: Sitting in that lounge is no different to sitting in Koru Club, catching your flight and then getting in your car parked at the airport. should Koru club stop serving alcohol?!

It isn't, because you can drink on the boat right up to within minutes of getting in your car.

I'm frankly amazed at the number of people who seem to think that it's fine: it probably explains a lot about the driving here.

How often does it happen where someone has just spent half the day driving, gets on the ferry and drinks for three hours, then are still driving under the influence several hours after they started their journey and who knows how much sleep they had before they started.

You're not on Atlantis anymore, Duncan Idaho.

Dairyxox: Are you sure there wasn't a 3rd member of their party not drinking having a rest down below or on the observation deck.

Yes. I happened to see them before we boarded (we were delayed for about 3 hours so there wasn't much to do but look around) and they were travelling alone.

Perhaps they need a modification to their current advertising slogan: "Boozing on the InterIslander, drinking to the other side".

After that amount of alcohol an adult male MIGHT be under the old legal limit, but would probably exceed the new (lower) limit.

IIRC the body can process about 1 standard drink per hour, so even under the new limit if you had 4 bottles @ 1.3 standard drinks you would likely be under.

Often they say that you can't apply that until you finish drinking though.
Now obviously the liver will be processing it as soon as it reaches your blood but 1 standard drink takes approx 30 mins to reach peak blood alcohol.

The real problem is though that any amount of alcohol has a big effect on driving skills as studied by many countries. This is why they lowered the limit. If it was 2 units with a meal over 4 hours I'd understand that ( wouldn't do it myself but understandable). But I think the chance of being impaired by 4 units in 4 hours is a risk people shouldn't be taking.

A lot of the arguments for and against drinking seem to identical to smoking, maybe it's only a matter of time...

Smoking is always bad for you - alcohol is sometimes bad for you (and always bad for alcoholics).
It is not possible to smoke in moderation, but it is possible to drink in moderation (if you're not an alcoholic).
The problem is that "moderation" means different things to different people ...

richms: I generally see the worst group of drunk drivers as older male businessmen types, rather than the youth that most the advertising is targetting.

IMO, set up a checkpoint at the ferry exit and be on the lookout for people pulling over and swapping with the missus on the lead up to it.

By exit you mean the terminal exit??   People may want to sleep it off before they drive off..
