I thought Peter Jackson was working on a remake of Dambusters, with Stephen Fry  writing the script ?

Hoofhaarted: I thought Peter Jackson was working on a remake of Dambusters, with Stephen Fry  writing the script ?

will it be split into three parts and have lots of extra characters that never appeared in the original?

I heard the biggest stumbling block was trying to find a PC name for Wing Commander Guy Gibson's dog.

Just discretely drop it from the story

I recall laughing my head off when the BBC did a dire overdub on the original film once, calling the dog Nigel or some such.

The dog had a name - in an historical film, you shouldn't change facts.

The middle film will be 2 hours of them trying to start the engines on the bombers...!

I didn't get 10 minutes in to that movie.  Terrible.  Such a shame as there was SO MUCH POTENTIAL for greatness!  Loved the TV show as a kid.  Would love to see a movie done properly.  Live action or not.

NonprayingMantis:
ah,  Starship troopers the movie is basically a satire of Heinlan's book.  It's no wonder you don't like it.

It's worse than that, it was a non related B-grade scifi movie that got redone to vaguely match the Starship Troopers background material and then turned into a Satire/Parody by someone who complete misunderstood the book and thought the society portrayed was evil and fascist. *sigh*

KiwiNZ: The Longest Day
The Battle of Britain

I'd put Guns of Navarone in there with those classics too. Still vividly remember watching that with my dad for the first time about 30 years ago...

Really tempted by Hill Street Blues and St Elsewhere, though not sure they'd actually be an improvement. Would be nice to be able to get DVD/Blu-ray's though...

Lias: Non terrible versions of The Postman and Starship Troopers wouldn't go amiss either.

starship troopers was actually an excellent satire film.

(it took me several watches to figure it out - also , it's nothing like the book at all, than than some very vague character names so don't think of it as like that)

That's the problem with some of the Paul Verhoeven movies.  They are sold to the public as action movies so much that many people don't realise there is also really good satire underneath. (Robocop is another one like that)

+1

There's a couple of us round here that are fans of Verhoeven's satirical approach.  Most people I talk to who watched it took it at face value and thought it was cheesy and cheap, completely missing the point.
