mdooher: When you and your ancestors have done something for hundreds of years and then the whole world goes into a panic

.....

I'm talking about the planes really

I propose a special case for any tribe who has been carrying daggers on planes for over three hundred years.

Yet my friend was made to dispose of his Marvin the Martian ray-blaster belt buckle because "someone might mistake it for a real gun".

I guess they didn't recognise the grand high brothers Warner.

Why do any of you give a toss if they take these on the plane or not, except for the fact that they are a religious article? You'd prefer they also ban crucifixes, turbans, priest's dog collars, monks robes and kippah and anything else that hints that a person might believe in something that you don't?

News flash: that makes you at least as intolerant and narrow minded as all of them.

Just sayin'.

Sure. No difference to banning knives of a certain type but continuing to allow the sale of massive kitchen knives...!

Legislation in the world we live in is mad. Until just after WW1, for example, anyone in Britain could buy and keep for self defence a pistol. So all this restriction on what we can do (which renders us sheep to the wolves in society) is very recent.

I do believe shoes and martial arts aren't considered a religion (nor are they weapons) - maybe if you tried hurtling a shoe at a certain president

umm, because they are knives.

Your argument is a total and utter strawman.  I haven't seen anybody complain about people taking crucifixes etc or other non-dangerous implements on planes - because those things aren't dangerous weapons. A knife IS a dangerous weapon.
I, along with most people, believe in freedom of religion, but that freedom to practice your religion should not extend to being allowed to break the law or get otherwise favourable treatment over other people.

In fact I'll state it right here so it's totally clear:

"People should be able to take whatever implements they want on a plane - whether that be crucifixes dog collars, turbans etc, provided they comply with the rules about weapons, explosives etc that apply to everybody." If the rules say 'no knives', then I'm sorry you can't take a knife.
Religion is not a justification for getting round security procedures.  (especially when, ironically, it is religion that actually caused these security procedures in the first place - a different religion, but still just as nuts)

If you accept that knives shouldn't be allowed to be taken on planes because they are dangerous weapons, then arguing that "because a few hundred years ago someone heard some voices in his head that told him it was really really important that I carry a dagger at all times" is absolutely NOT a valid reason to be granted an exception to that rule.

Of course, if you believe it should be totally fine to take knives on planes as a general rule, then the whole issue about religious acceptance becomes moot. In that case, people should be allowed them regardless of religion.

I remember going into an Emporium in Onehunga last year, they had butterfly knives, double edges, knuckle dusters, throwing knives all sorts. Advised Onehunga police arms officer and 6 months later the items were still there, I guess they are to busy dealing with licenced firearms holders to police illegal knives.

Legislation is completely screwy and in the end they don't even enforce half of it, almost like they come up with this trollop for the sake of justifying their jobs.

Mark: Nah!  Just pick a old Norse religion and say you need to have your axe with you at all times!  Then start expanding on your chosen religion/cult and claim that the gods demand that you MUST go out pillaging .. would make trips to Pak n Save far more exciting! ;-)

And how is this suggestion different from the extremism we see today in the Middle East?

1. Middle east = No Pak N Save
2. Middle east = Not Norse.
