JWR: Effects done by Weta studios here in NZ too.

Stu: Actually I think (could be wrong) it's Pukeko Pictures, not Weta. Still Sir Richard Taylor though.

A little further digging, and indications are that production companies are Weta Workshop AND Pukeko Pictures (together with ITV Studios).

Weta stuck out in bold during credits.

Also not hard to tell there was a distinct kiwi input given the repeatedly shown globe ;) That has to be a first!

There is an ITV documentary about the making of the series - "Reggie and Thunderbirds No Strings Attached".

It contains quite a lot about the New Zealand side of the operation.

They actually use models for a lot of it. The CGI is added later. The aim was to keep a link withe the original series.

Did you see the 'New Captain Scarlet' CGI version? Seems pretty decent. (Several eps are on Youtube).

Tried to get into it but prefer the new Thunderbirds vibe. Although the New Captain Scarlet was made sometime ago, the story lines are good but the animation doesn't feel right.

Would love to see it done with todays CGI techniques. :-)

I think they've done a pretty good job of it too.

imho it was a mistake to combine cgi and model sets. the contrast is often jarring. it should have been all cgi or all models/ stop motion.

did you fanboys also note the nod to space 1999 ?

Where are the Mysterons when you need them? They'd never have put up with this!!

I think my biggest complaint so far is that they look like a bad Boyband....

I didn't want to admit it but in my youth I was a fan of the show. And I have seen the BD's of the show which are very good quality and hold up.

I tuned in out of interest and was reasonably impressed. They managed to maintain the atmosphere of the original show while updating it to meet current viewer expectations (and I don't mean those of us who grew up on the original how, either when first screened or on reruns) but primarily boys aged 8-13?

My only major complaints were

1- I think they lost something in redoing the theme music. While the same melody the new arrangement I think has lost some of the urgency of the original (I played back the original just to confirm my views)

2. Not sure the voice of Lady Penelope is quite posh enough. It was interesting watching the doco on the remaking of the show where they interviewed Sylvia Andersen and comparing the two lady's accents.

I think Weta have done a great job with the CGI and models and it's a tribute to the craftsmanship of the team.

I loved Thunderbirds as a kid and I still love listening to the theme tune now !

I watched a little of the new one last night and my kids watched it this morning. I didn't like what they'd done to the opening music and was disappointed to see Lady Penelope to look like some 18 year old barbie with a lap dog.

In fact that's exactly what my 7yo said. They all look like barbies. We'll give it another crack though.

I've only watched the first 15 minutes and while I never really watched the original series I can remember some of it.
This new version so far looks really good.

I've only seen the ads and I am somewhat dubious.

I loved all of the various Supermarionation programs that the Andersons did in the 60's/70's.

It was a boyhood indulgence and I still have some original (well-used) 1970's vintage Thunderbirds toys from Matchbox.

I am going to introduce my kids to this new series and we'll see what they think.

I am very much on the fence until I see a whole episode.

Ditto.

I expect we still have a well-bashed Thunderbird 2 Dinky toy somewhere at the parentals.

I used to like Joe 90 in particular - the spinning Terry's Chocolate Orange sticks in my mind.

khull: Careful there is an entire generation like myself that weren't even around when this was a thing. I enjoyed the original it but you'd find others may not share the same view.

more like two generations that were born since the series was made in the 60s

this was before my time too, but I saw reruns as a kid and fell in love - even though I could smell the cheese as an 8 yr old

am encouraged by all the early positive opinions of the new version

Watchin' it right now. I dunno, it feels too Americanised or something to me.

I do like the look of the iconic thunderbirds ships however.

What - no strings?
I watched the original as a child, with my father.
I am now 70 years old.
This will appeal to people who have never seen the original.
I prefer the old version (all episodes are still available - with strings).

Im a fan of the old series and have them all on disk as a box set.

Watched the new one. I must confess, I didn't much like it. The CGI was pretty good, however:

  • It hopped around like crazy from one plot line to another, without ever really letting a storyline or some tension build.
  • Some of the graphics (the space surfboard!) were just too cheesy
  • Brains looking like the original, but sounding like a narcoleptic Jamaican was just jarring
  • Lady Penelope seems to have undergone a giant leap from posh to, well, Chav - which was also a bit odd, and
  • the whole think felt too "American" - PC, and designed for people with the attention span of a goldfish rather than the ability to follow a plot for a whole 40 minutes.
